MS Religion & Language Arts - January 29, 2016

This Week's TOP 5:

1. Are you joining us for Parent/Grandparent Day? Here is what we'll be doing in Room 322:

*8th grade Religion (8:25-9:10) --> 3 station rotations (Confirmation signs/symbols, Confirmation video, & Lectio Divina meditation on the Confirmation Gospel) + a fun wrap-up activity

*6th grade Language Arts (9:15-10:00) --> Choice activity time (Nonfiction text comprehension activity and/or Grammar in Literature activity) + a read aloud about our CSW theme (kindness)

I hope to see you on Monday!

2. Catholic Schools Week kicks off today with our student-led pep rally at North Park this afternoon. TONIGHT, the 8th grade students take on the ICSJ faculty in our annual students versus teachers basketball game. Doors open at 5:45, and the fun starts at 6. For more details on dress down days and related events, please see the packet sent home with your child last week. It's going to be a lot of fun!

3. Join the ICSJ community at Family Mass THIS Sunday, January 31st, at 11 a.m. (St. Joseph church). Fr. Larry is asking that students wear their uniforms to be a visible sign to our larger worshiping community. All of the teachers are looking forward to seeing a GREAT turnout of families.

4. The 8th graders participated in their Confirmation retreat last Sunday, and this upcoming Friday is the BIG DAY! We are so thrilled to witness these young men and women receiving the sacrament of Confirmation. Thank you to all parents, sponsors, family, and friends who have made this day possible. Way to go 8th grade!

5. As always, remember to review and sign your child's red folder. The following assessments will be sent home from me this week:

8th Religion: none

6th Religion: none

6th Language Arts: pronoun quiz, prefix quiz

Classroom Updates

6th Grade Language Arts

Nonfiction is taking over 6th grade reading and writing! On a tight timeline, students worked hard in the computer lab all week to finalize argumentative claims, take notes, and create outlines for their essays. Meanwhile, students tried their hands at running their own literature circles, and they also were assessed on being able to listen and respond to their peers during discussion. In grammar, students reviewed and took a quiz on pronouns. Students were also quizzed on word study prefixes this week.

6th Grade Religion

Time was split between preparing for Catholic Schools Week and studying Family Life Lesson 7 about respect during the first part of the week. On Thursday, the focus turned to aging and valuing people at all stages of life. 6A does not have class on Friday due to the pep rally, but 6B will start watching the movie version of Tuesdays with Morrie as a means to further reflect on lessons to be learned from aging and from people we love.

8th Grade Religion

The students' Confirmation unit is coming to its close. This week, students finished viewing and reflecting on the Decision Point series, with Lesson 12 focusing on humans' universal call to holiness. Students are wrapping up the week with a unit assessment/reflection, where they focus on five big questions about the themes and ideas we've studied over the past couple of months.
