MWES News- December Edition
Encouraging Excellence in our Panther Cub Community
Greetings from Ms. Colon
I hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving Break with family and loved ones. I was fortunate to have my family from P.R. join us. It was a reminder that being surrounded by our loved ones is a gift we should not take for granted.
December will be short, but packed with important events. While I understand many are planning trips to visit family and friends, our attendance policy remains in effect. Every minute counts! Our teachers are doing an outstanding job planning for lessons and assessments to grow your students. Being present will guarantee full access to the curriculum and interventions our school has to offer. We don't want our panther cubs to miss on the magical lessons we have in store for them.
As you plan your Holiday shopping, please consider using Amazon Smile for your purchases. They donate a portion to our school. Feel free to share it with friends. Your support is greatly appreciated.
I am extremely thankful for your involvement and continuous support. Our students are fortunate to be part of such a giving and involved community. Thanks again for allowing me to be your leader.

[Dumfries, Va.] (December 1, 2017) — District Administration magazine is honoring eleven schools and districts in reading and writing instruction and professional development initiatives as part of its Schools of TechXcellence program. This is the second round of honorees for this national recognition program.
TechXcellence was created by District Administration magazine, in conjunction with HP and Intel, to recognize schools that have implemented innovative, effective and replicable technology programs that contribute meaningfully to student or operational success. The December 2017 honorees were selected by the program’s judges from numerous nominations, and reflect programs that demonstrate effective and replicable success.
The eleven schools and districts honored in this round of TechXcellence—from eight states—have launched reading and writing instruction programs and professional development initiatives that incorporate technology powered by Intel, including laptops, tablets and 3D printers.
Mary Williams Elementary School is being recognized for its “Personalized Professional Development” program, in which educators direct their own professional learning paths. Much of the work is done online, eliminating the need for meetings and providing flexibility for participants. The initiative also encourages teachers to share their classroom experiences with their peers by participating in activities such as creating videos and podcasts.
The Mary Williams Elementary School initiative underscores the importance of embracing technology as part of the education process moving forward in the 21st century.
“Now that technology is an aspect of every classroom, teachers, principals and district leaders are finding more and more exciting and innovative ways to successfully implement it into learning,” says JD Solomon, editorial director at District Administration magazine. “We hope our readers are inspired by the creativity demonstrated by these honorees to launch similar initiatives in their own schools.”

Student illness
To prevent the spread of disease and to protect your student, please keep your student home and/or make an appointment with your health care provider for the following symptoms:
- temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- severe sore throat, headache, or cough
- eyes with inflammation, redness, and watery or purulent drainage
- undiagnosed and/or untreated skin rash
- communicable disease
If a student becomes ill during school, the parent/guardian of the student must be contacted before a student is allowed to leave the building. It is important to provide your student's school with updated contact numbers so parents/guardians may be reached concerning illness, as well as emergencies.
