Grade 1
First graders have enjoyed celebrating Dr. Suess’s birthday this week. In ELA, we are continuing to learn about Patriotic Symbols. The students are learning the specific meaning of each symbol along with facts about each one. In math, we are beginning our topics on place value. The students will begin by making groups of ten and solving problems with groups of ten. They will count groups of tens and ones to find a two digit number.
Grade 2
Grade 2 student’s enjoyed reading and rereading their favorite Dr. Seuss books this week, during “Read Across America Week”. Mrs. Germano’s class listened to “Horton Hears a Who” and made Horton elephants! We discussed how special we all are! We had a great time learning about Landforms from Mrs. Pina- Doherty last week. Next week, there will be no homework! It’s March Madness, and the teachers encourage all students and families to work on their Ancestor posters. We have a great few weeks coming up so stay tuned!
Grade 3
In third grade, we are working on writing responses to reading questions with evidence from the text. We are using the RACE strategy; Restate the question, Answer completely, Cite evidence, and Explain your thinking. This is an approach that is being used across grade levels when writing an essay.
Mrs. Silva, our school adjustment counselor, has been visiting classrooms discussing KINDNESS. Students have been brainstorming small ways to spread kindness in our school community. In Mrs. Cornell’s class, students shared compliments with each other in a kindness circle.
Grade 4
In fourth grade we are working on constructing a written response to reading using the RACE strategy. We are wrapping up our unit on adding and subtracting mixed numbers in math. Students who wish to participate in the Young American Poetry Digest competition, should have their submissions in to Mrs. Cowan by March 10th or online by March 20th. We hope you will review this opportunity with your student. We have all enjoyed our celebration of Read Across America this week!
Grade 5
The fifth graders enjoyed the activities for Read Across America Week in honor of Dr. Suess’ birthday. Listening to the Lorax fit right in with our study of Earth’s ecosystems and man’s impact on it. The students enjoyed having fun ways to dress that included pajamas, animal prints, crazy hair or hats and silly/mismatched socks. It is a fun way to focus on the importance of reading. We are all continuing our work with fractions and decimals, coordinate grid, geometry and metric conversions as we approach the end of term two. In this way, the students are able to practice the necessary skills needed for state testing. Moving forward in Social Studies, we will finish learning about The Revolutionary War and move on to the importance of building our democracy and the challenges faced in doing so while creating the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.
