September News
Mrs. Chua
School has gotten off to a great start. The students are tired by the end of the day, but I think they are settling in rather well. Please visit my classroom website for basic kindergarten information, curriculum information, a list of our monthly science/social studies themes and most importantly our special classes schedule. (If you want to know when gym is, that's the place to look:) To get there, go to the district web site www.deerfield.k12.wi.us. Go to the elementary page and follow the links by 'teachers' web pages' to my site. There will also be links to the monthly newsletters posted there.
Reading/ Math
This month we will be covering Unit 1 in reading. The theme is All About Me and the stories will help children identify what makes them special. Our high frequency words for this unit are on the green cards that you received in the Back to School Pack at Open House. Please begin to practice them with your child. These are words that should be recognized immediately, without sounding them out. They are known as high frequency words because they show up in print more often.
We will also begin Unit 1 in math. We will be learning about counting and cardinality 1-5, adding, subtracting and comparing numbers 1-5, showing numbers 1-10 and practicing numbers 1-10. Daily counting practice is also covered.

Things to Remember
Please send in an art smock if you haven't already. Just an old, adult size t-shirt works best. If you haven't sent in headphones yet, please do so. (No ear buds, please.) Also, an extra change of clothes, bagged and labeled would be a good idea. We do have spills and accidents. Your child should either wear gym shoes on gym day (Wed, Thurs, Fri) or have extra shoes in his/her locker to change into. Please make sure he/she can put these shoes on independently.
You MUST send a note or call the office if your child's pick up routine changes. All bus riders will be put on the bus unless we hear from an adult to do differently. This is our policy. Please do not email last minute changes to me. I may not check my email until after school. If you have questions, please let me know.
Also, if your child is absent, a written excuse note is mandatory for the absence to be excused. An email is not acceptable. If you have questions, please contact the school secretary, Mrs. Nelson.

Snack Time
In kindergarten, we have class snack. One person a day provides snack and students are welcome to have it or say no thank you. This is also the time we have milk. (This is a different payment from lunch.) If your child did not purchase milk, he/she is able to bring a water bottle or juice. Please refer to the monthly snack calendar sent home. I encourage healthy choices for snack such as string cheese, crackers, yogurt, granola bars, cereal bars, fruit (already cut please), veggies and dip or peanut butter. We have no food allergies that I'm aware of. Please limit sweet treats to party days and birthdays. Thanks for your help.
