Nuts & Bolts
Free/Reduced Lunch Application:
Please take some time to fill out the Free/Reduced Lunch Application. Even if your child will not be getting school meals, our school receives supplemental funding from the State of California as well as funds from the Federal Government based on the number of students who qualify for Free/Reduced lunch. We are asking each family to fill out the application. If your chid qualifies for CalFresh or CalWorks, you don't need to reapply.

Thanks to all of you who have assisted in logging your child onto Classlink. This is our "single sign-on" platform where students sign into one place and have access to all of their online learning platforms (SeeSaw, Google Classroom, Learning A-Z, Newsela) without having to memorize passwords for each program. We are in the process of working with our District IT to get all of our other programs uploaded to Classlink: Dreambox, Reflex, Epic, etc. Thank you for your patience.

Distance Learning Hack of the Month
Give your eyes a break every 20 minutes by looking at an object located 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Doing so will allow your eyes to relax and will give both you and your eyes some rest.

Distance Learning Parent Tips
For those of you that are at home with your children, we have noticed that some of you, with the best intentions I'm sure, are giving your children the answers to their teachers questions, or doing their work for them. As hard as it is not to do this, we ask that you not. Remember, you wouldn't sit in their classroom and monitor their every move. It is very important that our teachers know what your child can do independently. Giving your child the answers to a question, or having them copy your work does not help them. It also probably causes frustration between you two!
We are setting up some parent training for K-2nd grade parents to provide some tips on how to help your child without doing the work for them.
In the meantime, here are some tips you can follow (taken from this article):https://penguinhall.org/5-tips-for-parents-distance-learning/
1 – Help your child establish and stick to a routine.
Even though school has gone to an online learning format, treat school days just like you would if your child was attending school as usual. This includes having them get up at the same time everyday, get properly dressed, and eat a healthy breakfast.
2 – Check in with your child’s teacher/s.
Teachers are usually more than willing to connect with parents via email or phone after school hours. Check in if your child is having difficulty managing the online learning platform or staying on task. Be on the lookout for any communications from teachers indicating that they are having trouble connecting with your child during this time.
3 – Encourage physical activity and exercise.
Your child will be sitting in front of their computer for long stretches of time. Encourage them to use the breaks in the day to stretch, walk the dog, or do jumping jacks — any movement helps!
4 – Resist the urge to sit in on classes with your child.
While it may certainly be tempting to “pop in” on your child’s classes, please respect their privacy and that of other students. Connect with faculty and staff through email or other communication channels before or after school hours.
5 – Take care of you.
This one is extra important, and we hear it often, but take care of you. If you’re not taking care of your own physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs, you will have less energy, space, and patience to connect with and take care of your children. Even 10-15 minutes of scheduled “me” time during the day is beneficial.
Remember, "productive struggle" is good for their brains! Sometimes we have the misconception that we don't want anything to be hard for our children. I found this helpful article on Edutopia: https://www.edutopia.org/article/7-guiding-principles-parents-teaching-home
ENCOURAGE PRODUCTIVE STRUGGLE
Encourage kids to engage in productive struggle by giving them difficult assignments and praising them for their persistence. Research shows that when students solve problems that are challenging, but still within their abilities, they deepen their learning. Allow students to wrestle with problems before intervening.
When work is completed, try to avoid praising your child for “being smart;” the studies show that praising a child for inherent qualities tends to make them risk-averse and discourages trying new or challenging things. You want your kids to continue to push themselves, and praising hard work is more effective for building endurance and tenacity.
Reading & English Language Development (ELD) Specialist Corner
Attendance
Wednesdays: Teachers still have to take attendance on Wednesdays. If your older students (5th & 6th) don't have a Zoom class with their teacher, attendance is based on the work they have completed in Google Classroom. Students are expected to do a-synchoronus learning on Wednesdays (assignments, videos, etc. posted by teachers). In short, students are still "working" on Wednesdays!
Afternoon times for Art, PE, Science and the Creative Corner Classes on Wednesdays are considered enrichment and also time for language exposure & practice. We understand that some parents have the time to take their students to do alternive off-screen activities. However, if your kids are like mine (I am working full time), if they aren't mandated to do anything, they'll be playing video games or be on a screen (sadly, this is true). I make sure they are participating in these enrichment Zoom classes as well.
Social Emotional Corner: Counselor & Restorative
Social/Emotioal Needs Survey:
Just like we try to ensure that students in need of extra academic or social emotional support get help when we are in person, we are making sure we support all students the best we can during distance learning. We appreciate your time and look forward to learning more about what needs are at our school so that we can help all students and families get connected with services, resources and/or information. Please complete this form by 9/15.
Please submit ONE per family at CCLA. https://forms.gle/cJvjFehF3oUZ4tyD7
Restorative Specialist: Please welcome Mr. Jordan Jacobs, our new Restorative Specialist. Mr. Jacobs replaces Manny Morales, who has moved full time to Cook Middle School. Mr. Jacobs will be seeing students on Wednesdays during "Creative Corner".
