Masks Must Be Worn on Buses
Effective Monday, August 30th, face masks will be required on all school buses. If your child rides a school bus, please provide a mask for him or her to wear on the school bus. This new update and mandate was communicated to school districts by the South Carolina Department of Education on Thursday, August 26th. Superintendent Wilson communicated this change to all principals asking for notification be sent to all parents and students. If you have questions regarding this mandate, please contact Dr. Jerome Hudson at the Anderson School District Five District Office. The phone number is 864-260-5000.

Southwood Academy Welcomes Several New Teachers!
Mr. Benitez - Middle School Chorus
Mr. Benitez is our new middle school chorus teacher. He previously worked at Anderson Christian School and taught 5th grade general education. He has a great deal of musical experience in the community; he teaches lessons and directs musical theater productions. Mr. Benitez attended TL Hanna High School, Anderson University, and Converse College. He loves going to the movies and being involved in musical theater. Mr. Benitez loves being at Southwood Academy because his students love the arts and are involved!
Mr. Clark - High School Orcestra
Mrs. Dobson - 7th Grade Science
Mrs.Dobson is the new 7th grade science teacher. Mrs.Dobson taught 8 years in high school at Crescent High School, Unicoi County High School in Tennessee, and Owen High School in North Carolina. Many students know her because she has been a substitute teacher for 3 years. She graduated from Clemson University with degrees in biology and secondary education. Mrs. Dobson loves to travel, read, bake and go to national parks. Mrs. Dobson loves being at Southwood Academy, and she enjoys having fun with her students.
Mrs. Elwell - Resource
Mr. Maeger - 8th Grade Social Studies
Mr. Maeger is the returning 8th grade social studies teacher, and Southwood Academy is very glad to have him back! In the past, he has worked at Wright Middle School in Honea Path and taught 8th grade Social Studies. Mr. Meager attended Clemson University and Liberty University. In his free time, Mr. Maeger enjoys mountain biking, backpacking, tennis, and Crossfit. Mr. Maeger loves Southwood because of the students and his colleagues!
Miss Silvey - 6th Grade Science
Miss Silvey is Southwood Academy’s new 6th grade science teacher. This is Miss Silvey’s second year of teaching; last year, she taught 8th grade ELA at Robert Anderson Middle School. Miss Silvey attended Anderson University. She loves reading and baking. When asked what she enjoys most about being at Southwood Academy, she replied, “the students!”

*The Robert Anderson Sports Bus is now available after school!
Early Dismissal / Appointment Policies
- When you arrive at school, please call the office: 864-260-5205 to let us know you are here to pick up a student for dismissal.
- Make sure to have your license ready and press the buzzer for entrance.
- Once the door is unlocked, be prepared to show your license through the window while you will remain in the foyer. Please DO NOT enter the office area.
- We will have a sign-out sheet in the foyer. Please know that we will get your student to you as quickly as we can.

News from Nurse Rosa
1. Take the temperature of any child demonstrating shortness of breath, loss of taste, sore throat, muscle aches, chills, new or worsening cough, or runny nose.
2. Keep the child at home one or more days to monitor symptoms.
3. If you decide to have a COVID-19 test, notify the school nurse of the results so that the school can implement the Enhanced Health and Safety Protocols in the classroom(s) where your child attended.
*All information will remain confidential between the school and family. No other families will be given the health information of your child.

Media Center News
*Students may use the media center for reading, studying, or doing work on Chromebooks 7:30-8:00. There will be a limited number of passes available with the teachers on duty in the cafeteria.
*Please sign in when you visit the media center throughout the day with a pass.
*ELA classes will visit the media center every 2 weeks! Books will be checked out for 2 weeks.
*Students may check out up to 2 items.
*Students may get books off of the shelves themselves after using hand sanitizer!
