*Japan- a chain of islands that stretches north to south in the northern Pacific Ocean.

*The four largest islands in Japan are: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu

*Jomon- means "cord marks" in Japanese language.

*Yayoi- Japanese culture

*clan- A group of families related by blood or marriage.

*Jimmu- Yamato (Japanese clan) leader

*constitution- plan of government

*Shotoku- Yamato prince

*Animism- belief that all natural things are alive and have their own spirits.

*Shrines- holy places

*Heian- a capital city

*Samurai- class of warriors in feudal Japan who pledged loyalty to a noble in return for land.

*Minamoto Yoritomo- the leader of the Minamoto

*Shogun- commander of all of the emperor's military forces.

*Kamakura- a small seaside town

*Ashikaga Takauji- a Japanese general

*Dalmyo- powerful military lords

*Vassal- in feudalism, a noble who held land from and served a higher- ranking lord, and in return was given protection.

*Feudalism- political system based on bonds of loyalty between lords and vassals.

*Sects- smaller religious groups

*Martial arts- sports that involved combat and self- defense.

*Meditation- practice of quiet reflection to clear the mind and find inner peace.

*Calligraphy- the art of writing beautifully.

*Tanka- Japan's oldest form of poetry.

*Murasaki Shikibu- She wrote The Tale of Genyi.

*Kyoto- (capital) became a major center of production and trade.

*Guilds- medieval business group formed by crafts people and merchants.
