Need for Motion
- The human body is not designed to sit still.
- Allowing people to sit on the floor allows them to carry out a variety of posture changes, thus they feel better and are more emotionally involved.
- The goal with our classrooms should be to stimulate a healthy environment for everyBODY.
- We, as humans, move unconsciously, we have a need for motion.
- Daylight and fresh air provide natural stimulation for students.
- Nerves that wire together, fire together!
- When the body is fatigued, the brain is fatigued.
- Maximum exposure to a chair should be 50% of the day.
- Make peace with fidgeting as it turns on people's brains.
- We need to create classroom spaces that inspire motion.
- No single space is the answer.
- Integrate physical activity throughout the day.
Walking around Bransford Elementary, many of us are embracing the need for alternative seating options for our students, knowing they have a need to different learning areas. Thank you for embracing students learning and physical needs as you arrange your classrooms. As we continue to learn more about our students, are their small environmental changes we can make to meet their needs? In this week's Bransford Blast, I asked parents for Bistro height tables to provide classrooms standing collaborative spaces for those students who like to stand and work. I'm considering a mini trampoline for the office for students who need a motion break (I might enjoy it too!). What ideas do you have to embrace our students' needs to move? How does embracing students' needs to move positively impact their learning?
I am truly proud of the work each of you has done in your areas to embrace students' needs for motion! Looking forward to us learning together and trying different ways to meet the individual needs of our Texans!
