How are earthquakes measured
The mercalli and Richter scale
how earth quakes happen...
Earthquakes happen when tectonic plates move and flex until they unleash an epic amount of energy.
Meet the scales
these are the scales
This is the Richter scale
It uses the largest seismic wave to find the magnitude.
This is the mercalli scale
It uses the observations of people who lived through the earthquake.
Me when im in an earthquake.
AAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
How are the scales different.
The Richter scale and the mercalli scale are different because the Richter scale uses the magnitude of the strongest seismic wave. On the other hand the mercalli scale uses the observations of people who had gone through the earthquake to estimate the strength of the earthquake, thus making the Richter scale more accurate.
