Greetings NPS Parents,
Today, the Oklahoma State Board of Education has voted to temporarily close all Oklahoma schools. As a result, Norman Public Schools will be closed Monday, March 23 until Monday, April 6. This includes all extra-curricular activities. Please keep in mind this is a rapidly evolving situation and local officials could choose to extend the closures beyond this date. Additionally, all district offices and school sites will be closed to the public effective immediately.
I absolutely agree with and applaud this decision. In fact, the Norman Board of Education had already planned to vote this week on school closures. While closing our schools is a drastic measure, it has become abundantly clear that this is a critical step in protecting students, families, staff members and the greater Norman community.
I understand this information sparks a lot of questions. Please know we are working closely with the Oklahoma State Department of Education to gather the information necessary to finalize our plans with regard to instructional resources, the academic calendar, providing student meals and much more. We will share details on these plans as soon as possible. In the meantime, we encourage everyone to follow recommendations outlined by the Centers for Disease Control to prevent further spread of the coronavirus.
These are certainly challenging times, and we are dealing with an unprecedented situation. We understand the hardships school closures can cause, and we are doing our best to balance our priority to protect the health and safety of the community with our desire to provide, to the best of our abilities, the essential services that so many students receive from us.
Sincerely,
Dr. Nick Migliorino
