Productive Struggle for Teens
Productive struggle happens when students have a growth mindset. It is the "sweet spot" between work that is too easy and that which is too challenging.
As teachers, rather than immediately helping students at the first sign of trouble, we try to allow them to work through struggles independently before we offer assistance.
That may sound counter-intuitive, since many of us assume that helping students learn means protecting them from negative feelings of frustration. But for students to become independent learners, they must have practice persisting in the face of challenges.
The productive struggle workout also allows brains to strengthen problem-solving neural pathways that keep us fit for learning throughout life.
The workout works for adults too, so next time you are faced with a challenge, see it as a little gym time for your brain.
Friendly Reminder - Order your child's yearbook before the price increases.
