Electromagnets

What is an electromagnet?
An electromagnet runs off of electricity and is a soft metal core made into a magnet by the passage of electric current through a coil surrounding it.
How does it work?
An electromagnet works when an electric current produces a magnetic field. The magnetic field that is produced by an electric current then forms circles around the electric current.
Who invented the electromagnet? How?
William Sturgeon invented the electromagnet in 1824. Sturgeon realized that soft iron was magnetic only when in contact with a steel magnet. When he detached them, the soft iron lost its attraction, so decided to replace it with an electric coil. When he broke the current of magnetism the soft iron dematerialized, creating the electromagnet.
