Proctor Patriots
School Newsletter, September 2019
September is a Busy Month!
During the first week of school, we began teaching all students in our school community how we show our "Proctor Pride:"
P - Purpose
R - Respect
I - I Will Do My Best
D - Do Kind Things
E - Everyone Will Be Safe
This is part of our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support – PBIS.org)
implementation. Please help your child show their "Proctor Pride" by reviewing our
expectations for each area at our school. When you are on campus, remind your child and
praise them for when they are following our school-wide expectations. You can also
practice our school song at home (which will be posted on our school website). Together, we can ensure that all of our students have a safe and successful school year.
Each month, Proctor will hold a school-wide Flag/Character Trait assembly during the last Friday of the month (schedule permitting). Our Leadership Team (Positive Patriots) will lead the school in the Pledge of Allegiance, as well as each classroom teacher will present chosen students who demonstrate the character trait of the month (this month is Responsibility). Please join us on September 13th, @ 8:15 AM for our first assembly of the month, then stay for Coffee Talk with the Principal held in the Art Center directly after.
I am proud to serve this amazing community of learners. As I mentioned during Back to School Night (in the sweltering heat) I have an “open door” policy and welcome parent/guardian input, suggestions, sharing of concerns and brainstorming of solutions. Please don’t hesitate to contact me via phone, email or to make an appointment. Your partnership and support in your child’s education at Proctor is critical and I look forward to working with you this year.
Go Patriots!
Heather Ghereben, Principal
While on Campus......
- Please make sure to sign in at the main office anytime you come to school during the day to volunteer in a classroom, drop-off an item or pick up a student.
- This includes dropping books or money off in the school library, or your child's lunchbox in front of their classroom. If you need to drop something off for your child during the school day, please drop it off to the main office.
- Please do not go directly to the classroom to speak or conference with the teacher, as it causes an unnecessary disruption.
- While on campus, all adults must use the office bathrooms. For safety purposes during the school day, do not enter the student bathrooms even if you are escorting your child. If you have a toddler or a non-school aged child, you are welcome to use the bathrooms located in the office.
- Parents/Families, please stay under the breezeway area off the playground during the morning recess before school, and please keep the walkways clear for students to be dismissed to class.
You will be approached by a staff member if these guidelines are not followed.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Proctor School Walkathon!
School is in full swing and we are off to a great start! Preparations for the PTA's Annual Walkathon are underway and it is promised to be another fun event. Think COLOR SPLASH! Last year the students outdid themselves, raising over $45,000 for their school!! Since Patriots always love a challenge, this year our fundraising goal is $50,000.
Today all students received the Walkathon informational packet. These documents can also be found on our fundraising website and at the front office.
Our official kick off will be Tuesday, September 3rd. On that date, the following are due:
- T-shirt Art Contest (3rd-5th grade) - Staff will choose the winning artwork to be printed on the front of all the walkathon t-shirts!! **Please note that in order for students to be eligible for a t-shirt this year, they must enroll on our partnered fundraising website The Get Movin' Fund Hub (formerly known as The Get Movin' Crew.)**
- T-Shirt Sponsorship Fforms - SPONSORS NEEDED! This is the easiest way to jump start your child's fundraising. Do you own a business or you know a business who loves to support and give back to the community? You can ask your chiropractor, dance studio, orthodontics, veterinarian...the list is endless! These sponsorships will be printed on the back of over 300walkathon t-shirts. Also the sponsorship credit will be applied to your child's fundraising amount.
We will also open up our fundraising website at https://www.getmovinfundhub.com/login to make fundraising easy, interactive and fun. You will need the Parent Registration Code to enroll- 5d5d8e706a5a0 We will also continue to take cash/checks donations.
Stay tuned for additional updates and thank you for your support! Our school would not be successful without your participation!

September is Attendance Awareness Month!
A Note from the Attendance Office!
Please note that absences due to vacation/s are considered unexcused absences and cause
your child to miss valuable instructional time. Education Code requires that students are to be in school 180 days unless they are ill or are on short term independent study due to extenuating circumstances.
During the first two weeks of school, important routines and procedures are shared with students to ensure a smooth transition to a new grade. During the first 10 days and last 15 days of the school year, students who are absent from school for extended periods of time cannot complete school work using Independent Study.
Please refer to the updated board policy on Independent Study:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/12oSaxzuEUDt_xxGXpzY0s5ExmNtIb9oX/view
Please also note that extended unexcused absences of three days or more are referred to the
School Attendance Review Team (SART). Although we understand the importance of family
trips and vacations, we ask families to please plan trips during school holidays and vacations
so that your child will not miss valuable instructional time.
Thank You!

How can all parents celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? Hispanic Heritage Month is a way to learn more about the ways in which Latinos have contributed to the United States and the history of diverse Latino groups in the U.S. For parents of non-Latino children, it’s a great time to learn about other cultures and racial/ethnic groups with your child and model the appreciation of diversity. The U.S. is more diverse than ever and it’s a wonderful time to affirm the contributions of Latinas and Latinos and their rich cultural backgrounds. For children who are of Latino heritage, helping them to develop a positive sense of group identity can give them a positive sense of self as well as help them navigate experiences of discrimination in the future. In fact, the research suggests that Latino children most grounded in their culture tend to have better educational outcomes than those who have lost a sense of connection to their culture.
Expose them to music in Spanish. If you have preschool or early elementary children, José-Luis Orozco’s music is a great option. If you are Latino, his music helps to promote traditions and bilingualism. His latest album called ¡Come Bien! Eat Right! promotes healthy nutrition.
Visit a Farmer’s Market and give thanks to the United Farm Workers Association, founded by Cesar Chavez. Cesar Chavez was a Mexican American civil rights leader who dedicated his life to non-violent protest in support of humane treatment of migrant workers. The union fought against pesticide use, low wages, and cruel working conditions. Watch the movie Cesar Chavez.
Print out some of Frida Kahlo’s most famous works of art and talk about how the art makes your children feel.
Try some recipes that your children can help prepare. Learn about the origin of the recipe, such as the Latin American country it comes from and any other facts about the dish. This is a great way to expose children to the diversity within Latin America.
Learn new phrases with your children such as “Te amo” and incorporate them into your conversations.
Visit your local library and find out what inventions we use today were created by Latinas or Latinos, find out who was the first Latino congressman, etc.
Watch videos on Latino Americans PBS series with your children representing two different Latino groups and discuss the differences and similarities with your child. Watch this Latino Americans video series on PBS.
More Enrichment Program's coming to Proctor!
There are many new and exciting enrichment programs coming to Proctor this school year!
As we continue to build our school's Mutli-Systems of supports, we need to not only also focus academic interventions, but also on supporting the social-emotional well-being of our students.
Therefore, I am excited to announce our partnership with Castro Valley Yoga to offer a FREE after school-program to Proctor students! This new youth program will focus on the teachings and practices of yoga and mindfulness; to foster students' wellness, health, self-esteem, compassion, and strength. They will also be providing support to our staff through trainings, workshops, and classroom curriculum, all to enhance our Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS).
This 75 minute class will be held on Fridays after school, starting September 13th. A separate email will be sent with additional details about the class, and how to sign-up.
We are also excited to continue partnering with Music for Minors II to continue to bring classroom music and instruction to our K-3rd grade students! See Attached Flyer below on how you can get involved!
And finally, thanks to the Proctor Science Boosters, K-3rd grade Hands-On Science Lab classes are returning to Proctor as we partner with Spectrum of Science! Our very own Tracy Mills will be leading the instruction of all K-3rd grade students in engaging hands-on science lab lessons. Spectrum of Science will also continue to provide additional after-school courses for those interested, see our website for more details.
