We Will Never Forget : 9/11
By: Preet Kaur
Background
On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Often referred to as 9/11, the attacks resulted in extensive death and destruction, triggering major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism and defining the presidency of George W. Bush. Over 3,000 people were killed during the attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., including more than 400 police officers and firefighters.
Media Portrayal
There are many conspiracies as to how and why 9/11 attack happened. The one fact that media made clear was that Osama Bin Laden has his big hand behind all of this. They showed a lot of videos of him, taking the responsibility for this attack. The conspiracies that media made were that Jewish knew that the attack was going to happen because on that day 4,000 Jewish employees took off from work and some of the first people to record the attacks on camera were Jewish also. The other one was that plane didn't collapse the towers, bomb did. There was no way the plane could destroy the steal that was used to hold the tower up, there had to be some missiles or explosives included to destroy the towers. The other conspiracy about flight 93 is that was crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, is believed that the passengers fought back and crashed the plane in to a field.
Biases
The type of bias that you see continually throughout stories of 9/11 attack would be bias of source selection. It is because each story/article that you read about 9/11 attack has different sources depending on which side of the argument the author is taking. They use this bias to make their point seem stronger than the other and try to use it to persuade the audience to see it in their way. Some people's prejudice and 9/11 attack also affected Sikh community a lot. People mistaken them as Muslims and they started attacking them and killed them for 9/11 attack.
Historical Criticism
The type of criticism that I notice throughout the 9/11 attack stories is historical. It is historical because you see so many theories over how the attack was done and each theory seems to have a different idea. People today write about what happened and how it happened, when in reality no one knows exactly what happened that day. There are many theories that the plan can't explode the towers like the way they did and there should be bombs included. This attack marked a great change in our history and changed a lot of people's lives.
My opinion
There are a lot of theories behind how the attack was happened and what exactly collapsed the towers, bombs or plane. I really think that bombs were used during the attack because researchers show that the airplanes are constructed with very light aluminum in order to make it easier to fly and there is no way it can make as much damage to the twin towers as it did. The other thing that theorists believe in is that there is no way a plane's fuel can melt the steel to make the towers collapsed. From these theories, i really believe that there were other explosives included in the attack.
