Like many of you, we received the announcement regarding the calendar for fall sports released by the N.C. High School Athletic Association. It is still too early to say what this will mean for marching band. Doc is reaching out to Mr. Mares and others to see what will be possible for band this year. He is optimistic that we may be able to have marching band in the Spring. Stay tuned as things seem to change quickly these days!

Zoom with Doc!

Calling all band students! Join Doc tomorrow (Friday, August 14th at 7:00) for a Zoom get-together! This is just a fun, completely optional chance to get together before the school year starts. Say "hi" to Doc, see all your band friends, and get a dose of Doc's wisdom and positivity! Because Zoom limits the number of participants, we ask that siblings please join the meeting together.

Sponsorship Committee Needs Your Help!

The re-organizing and rebuilding of a Sponsorship Committee has recently become a top priority for the band. With the loss of important fundraisers such as State Fair Parking and PNC, we are anticipating the need to supplement the band's general fund through other means.

We are looking for people willing to serve on the Sponsorship Committee, either contacting potential sponsors or researching online opportunities for sponsorships and grants. If you are interested, please contact us at We need your help! We will provide you with the training and materials you need.

Meet our Drum Majors!

Will Wakeford is your head drum major for the 2020-2021 season! He is a senior and was previously a member of the Alto Sax section. He’s been involved with the band since his oldest brother joined the program 9 years ago, and he’s only grown to love it more with each passing year. He’s a self described geek who always loves talking about music, TV, movies, and Dungeons and Dragons. He enjoys listening to and making a wide variety of music, but he’s especially a fan of funky type music, and musical theater jams. He has always been drawn to the ability of music to tell stories. He’s also been a part of the musical theater and chorus programs at Athens, and wants to be a professional actor someday. He’s hoping to study theater in college, and he definitely plans to keep band in his life any way he can. His favorite thing about the Band community has always been how easy it is to find friends. He is excited to make some more this year!

Emily Schmidt is your assistant drum major for the 2020-2021 season! She is a sophomore who is thrilled about marching band and music in general. Emily is a clarinet player at Athens, but also plays violin in various ensembles and viola in the Triangle Youth Philharmonic. She enjoys theater & dance and participates in the STEM Academy at Athens. Emily is so excited for when we can get back together as a band family!!

Coupon Book Fundraiser--An Easy Way to Help the Band

Our annual coupon book sale is going on now. Please consider participating!

Coupon books sell for $30 each and for each book sold, $10 credit goes to the student's band account and $5 goes into the general fund. Our opportunities for fundraising may be limited this year, so jump right in to earn band credit for your account AND support the band at the same time.

We would love for you to participate even if you do not need credit for your band account. You can help the band by selling coupon books and donating ALL the proceeds to the general fund. Just send an email to and let Liz and Georgia know that you want to donate your portion of the sales to the general fund. This is a great way to give back to the band at a time we really need it!

Check out the Coupon Books Fundraiser page for all the information you need to get started! Paper books will also be available in mid-August and more information will be coming out on the paper books soon.

If you have questions about the coupon book fundraiser, please contact our coupon book chairs, Liz Workman and Georgia Schmidt at
