Big Idea
Directions
1. Create
Have students create Quiz Cards using 4 x 6 index cards or give them the attached template. Be sure they include important ideas, vocabulary, facts, and concepts from the material covered in the unit using pictures and writing. Click for resource.
2. CollectCollect the Quiz Cards so that you can assess the students’ understanding and, if needed, re-teach material before the test or quiz.
3. Give BackIt is important to give the Quiz Cards back to the students so they may be used to study for the test or quiz in class or at home.
When to Use
Use Study Cards to summarize and review information:
- During Guided Practice of a lesson where students work in pairs to create the study cards
- During the Independent Practice of a lesson so that students can decide for themselves what information is really important
- As a closing activity so that students can review what was learned in the lesson
- As an entrance or exit ticket
- To evaluate student’s ability to discern the main idea or summarize a concept learned in class
- As a pre or post test to determine next steps
Strategy Variations
*Give lower level students the word and definition. Then match and draw a picture.
*Have students include synonyms and antonyms
*Use different forms of the word by changing tenses, prefixes, suffixes, etc.
*Apply concepts and connect meaning of the new vocabulary words in authentic, real life situations in all content areas
*Apply new words in a quick write activity
*Use cards for word wall resource
*Increase engagement by playing games! (Jeopardy, Taboo, Pictionary, Hedbandz, Charades, etc.)
