WHES Highlights

March 17, 2023

Dear WHES Families,

It's hard to believe we have arrived at Spring Break of the 22-23 school year! It won't be long and summer will be here. Enjoy break with your family! We will not send another edition of WHES Highlights before we return on 4/4.

Reminder: there is no school March 20th - April 3rd for Spring Break; students return on Tuesday, April 4th.

We hope you enjoyed this year's One Zone, One Book and the reading of Charlotte's Web! We will wrap it up at tonight's Movie Night sponsored by PTA, Friday, March 17th, in the WHES Gym! Beginning at 4:30pm, Mondal's food truck and Mateo's food truck will be available for dinner with family-friendly menu options. Doors will open at 5:30pm and the viewing of the Charlotte's Web movie will begin at 6:00pm! Bring some lawn chairs or blankets, snacks and/or drinks, and enjoy this fun evening with us!

We have filled 2 positions on the WHES PTA Board for 2023-2024! Welcome to our new President, Ashleigh Anderson! And to our new Vice President, Mallory Spitzer! We are still on the hunt for a Secretary and Treasurer - if you are interested or have questions, please reach out to woodmenelempta@gmail.com.

Please continue reading below for upcoming dates and events. Also, like/follow our school Facebook page - Woodmen Hills Elementary School (https://fb.me/WHESTornadoes) for more updates and the sharing of good things happening at WHES!

Please be sure to continue to check the Family Handbook for complete details of all day-to-day systems and procedures. Read the information below carefully and don't hesitate to call our school office with any questions or needs at 719.495.5500.

Have a great Spring Break,

PTA Shoe Drive!

WHES Community,

WHES PTA is excited to launch our Shoe Drive Fundraiser to raise money for online learning programs. By donating gently worn, used and new shoes to our shoe drive, the shoes will be given a second chance and make a difference in people’s lives around the world.

All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of micro-enterprise partners. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send her son to law school. Please check out the 2 min video to learn more about how the shoes our Tornados collect will have a positive impact on others. What is a Micro-Enterprise

What you need to know:

  • We will earn funds based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn, used, and new shoes collected.

  • Funds2Orgs will issue us a check for the collected shoes.

  • Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used and new shoes at any of our drop off locations (WHES lobby, Woodmen Hills Rec Center East, Meridian Ranch Rec Center) or at one of our Drop of Events.

  • WHES Drop off box will be available April 4th - 28th and all Rec Center drop boxes will be available throughout Spring Break (3/18-4/3). Over Spring Break please take a moment to go through any shoes your child has outgrown or you no longer wear and set them aside to send into school with your child. Please ask your friends and family to do the same.

  • WHES has a goal to fill 160 bags of shoes!

Attached you will find a guide to help you decide what shoes to send in. If possible, please send in pairs of shoes tied or rubber banded together to make the bagging process easier . Thank you for helping make this a successful event. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to help please reach out to Ashleigh Anderson (ashleighanderson1019@gmail.com) or Lauren King (laurenrking89@gmail.com).

Thank you for helping us reach our goal,

WHES PTA

CMAS Letter to 3rd through 5th Grade Families

Dear Woodmen Hills Elementary School Family,

With the combination of very warm days, followed by cold days, you know that spring is around the corner. With the change in seasons comes the time to measure the progress your child has made in the classroom this year. Beginning April 11th, 2023, third, fourth and fifth-graders will participate in Colorado assessments of English language arts and math. Our fifth-graders will also take tests in science. These tests provide important feedback on the firm foundation we have built with each learner.

  • These assessments do not define a student’s abilities and skills, but they do impact how we deliver instruction to meet the unique needs of each student. As examples: Teachers use these assessment results to plan with students and set goals to support their individual paths, planning for next steps in the learning journey.

  • Parents gain insight about academic strengths and areas for growth, as well as information about how students compare to others across the state and nationally.

  • Our community is provided with information about how our school is performing overall.

Testing Dates are as follows:

  • 3rd grade- Testing 4/11-13 9:45-11:15 and 12:00-2:00

  • 4th grade- Testing 4/11-13 and 18-20 8:45-10:15

  • 5th grade- Testing 4/11-14 and 17-21 8:45-10:15

Here are some things you can do at home to maximize your child’s success: feed your child a good breakfast the mornings of the assessment, ensure your child gets a good night’s rest, continue daily reading time at home, and continue to practice basic math.

On behalf of the entire staff, thank you for your continued support of your child, our teachers, and our school. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. You can also access further information about our district and state assessment program at: http://d49.org/assessments.

In partnership,

Bethany Stegman

Principal, Woodmen Hills Elementary School

Intent to Return Forms - a message from D49

Dear District 49 Families,

During this exciting time, our schools need to gather the intent to return information for their current students and give you a way to update your information quickly. Getting this information from our D49 families helps our schools better prepare for the upcoming school year and plan class sizes and staffing needs. The D49 - Intent to Return Survey for current K-11th grade students is now available electronically through the PowerSchool Parent Portal account by either accessing your Parent Portal account on a desktop computer or the Parent Portal Mobile App (not the D49 App).

Linked here is a step by step resource on how to complete this Intent to Return survey via Ecollect (Desktop).

For a general overview on how to access Ecollect forms through the Parent Portal Mobile App, click here.

If you do not have a Parent Portal account, please refer to the email sent out from District 49 on December 21st, 2022, titled “District 49 Parent Portal Setup Information” for your access information or reach out to your school Registrar.

Thank you.

District 49

Please review the information regarding attendance for the 22-23 school year! You will find our district policy, resources, and absence procedures.

Health Information

Hi, I’m Shelly Duran and I am the nurse at Woodmen Hills. Below are some reminders regarding health and illness...

  • Medications - All medications, including over-the-counter medications, require a medication form completed by your child’s physician. Student’s may NOT bring medication to school or self-administer any medication. All medication forms and action plans can be found here: https://www.d49.org/domain/1284

  • Immunization Requirements - Colorado law requires all students to be immunized against certain communicable diseases. For more information regarding required immunizations and how to complete a non-medical immunization exemption form can be found here: https://www.d49.org/domain/261. (If you are filing a non-medical exemption, please complete the online module, print and sign the exemption form, and return to the health room.)

  • Illness Guidelines - Falcon School District 49 is following the Illness Guidelines from the Colorado Department of Public Health & Children’s Hospital Colorado. Please refer to these guidelines and keep sick students home. These guidelines are linked below.

  • Phones in the Classroom - Students are not permitted to use classroom phones or personal phones to contact parents in the event of illness. Students must come through the health room to call parents in order for the absence to be excused.

Nutrition Services Information

Woodmen Hills Elementary School offers breakfast and hot, school lunch each day. You can view more information from D49 Nutrition Services linked here. You can send lunch money in with your child or add money to their account by visiting D49 Nutrition Services. For assistance with meal fees, you can complete the Meal Assistance Application by visiting this link.

Lunch Prices:

  • Elementary:
    • Breakfast $2.50
    • Lunch $4.00
  • Secondary:
    • Breakfast $2.75
    • Lunch $4.35
  • Adult (without milk):
    • Breakfast $3.00

Federal regulations play a direct role in setting the price of school meals and D49 is required to match government meal reimbursement rates by charging for meals. Updating our rates this year is a difficult, but necessary adjustment to continue providing meals in our challenging economy.

Specials Information / Schedules

Kindergarten and First Grade:

Kindergarten and first-grade students engage in 5 specials, including Art, Music, PE, PBL/Technology, and Library. Specials occur on a daily schedule. Students will have the same special on the same day of the week.

Second through Fifth Grade:

Second through fifth-grade students engage in 4 specials, including Art, Music, PE, and PBL/Technology. Specials occur daily, on a 5-day, ABCD, rotating basis. Students will have the same special for 5 school days in a row (i.e. art for 5 school days, then PE for 5 school days).

The Specials schedule is always available in the WHES Highlights sent weekly via email - the specials rotations link is for all grades, K-5th, and the ABCD monthly rotation calendars are for 2nd-5th grades.

Art Class Information: Students often use materials such as watercolors, watercolor pencils, tempera and acrylic paint, and oil pastels during art classes. While using these materials brings new discoveries and masterpieces, it can also bring a concern for not washing out of clothing, etc. Please consider having your child(ren) wear 'older' clothing items on art days.

PE Information: Students are active during PE class! Proper footwear supports safety and ability to move and engage in a variety of activities. Please ensure your child(ren) wear tennis shoes/sneakers on PE days.
