Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Summer Term 2 - Issue 5

Come on England!!!

Big picture

A word from Mr Broom.

It was an unexpected surprise to receive our year six children on Tuesday morning. Obviously the fire at Sherburn High has caused a significant amount of damage to buildings, but also to transition plans for their three week pre-summer period. Our thoughts are with our colleagues at the high school.

Meanwhile in school, it's been very hot! Our children really are a credit to us and their behaviour over the past few weeks has been impeccable considering the temperatures. It's also been the summer term round of lesson observations and I'm really pleased to report that our teachers are doing a wonderful job, providing exciting learning opportunities for all our children.

I've also visited each class this morning to inform the children of who their class teachers will be for September. It was lovely to see so many excited faces once they knew. I've included details in the letter attached.

Next week our Year 6 SATs results return to us on Tuesday 10th July at 0730. As soon as I possibly can, I will inform the children of their outcomes and write to each Year 6 parent with a copy on that day.

Summer Fair - Possible England Match

Our Summer Fair is next Wednesday 11th July from 5pm to 7pm and fate would have it that if England beat Sweden on Saturday afternoon, they will face their next opponents on this evening at 7pm.

If this happens, we will be showing the England game live on our giant screen in the school hall and I would like to invite you to join us. We are more than happy for you to bring your own drinks and snacks to the event too. School will be open for the full length of the game.

Staffing for Classes - 2018-19 Academic Year

Our Special Achievers this Week

School Meal Price Increase

I have to inform you that from September the cost of a child's school meal with rise to £2.30 per day (£11.50/week). While this is a weekly increase of £1.00 it is a necessary step to ensure our school meals remain value for money. Our Key Stage One children (Reception to Year 2) will continue to receive free school meals.

School Meal Routine Changes

In the final week of term, we are going to trial run a new routine for lunchtimes so that our children maximise their time being active outside while having a healthy, nutritional and balance meal.

During the morning registration period, children will be provided with three choices:

1. The cooked meal for that day.

2. A jacket potato with salad.

3. A sandwich choice of the day with salad.

The system will mean that the children will try new foods and we would very much like you to support us with this initiative.

A gift from The Rotary Club

We are very thankful to the Sherburn Rotary Club for their gift of a dictionary for our year 5 children. The children received their special gift in assembly this morning.

School Closed - Afternoon of Wednesday 18th July

If you didn't receive it, I sent a letter to all parents/carers on Thursday regarding our afternoon closure on Wednesday 18th July from 1315. As I mentioned in the letter, we need the time to complete vital whole staff training on Mathematics, ready for September. We do appreciate the inconvenience this may cause but hope that the early notice will negate any child care issues which may arise.

It's worth pointing out that 'Buddies', our on-site child care provider will be able to take a limited number of children on this afternoon. If this is something you are interested in, please see the contact details at the bottom of this newsletter.

Year 5 Pride Celebration Work

As part of their learning journey, our year five children have been learning about LGBTQ+. The children have been exploring prejudice, relationships, understanding, acceptance and challenging stereotypes and I must say that their attitudes to what can be a sensitive topic have been nothing short of outstanding. Below are some of the video clips from the dance work they have been working on.

Nursery Applications for September 2018

Just a quick note to let you know we will be allocating places for our Nursery session for September 2018 very shortly. If you would like a place, please contact the school office.

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Year 2 children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 100%!

Our average attendance this week is 96.4%. We're above the national expectations!

We have a small number of children whose attendance is well below the national expectations. These children are known as persistently absent when their attendance falls below 90%. I will be making telephone calls to parents of these children.

Thank you for your continued support with our attendance drive. It is really appreciated.
