Reading Workshop
In Reading Workshop, the children are learning that readers build good habits. Some of the habits that we have learned about so far are:
1. Readers take a sneak peek
2. Readers check their sneak peek
3. Readers do SOMETHING at the end of a book (reread favorite page, reread book, retell story, etc.)
Please practice these habits when reading with your
children each night!
Writing Workshop
- Think of an idea
- Plan: touch the paper, tell the story, sketch the pictures
- Write
We are currently writing Small Moment stories about our own lives (something that we did or that happened to us personally). A small moment is a small chunk of a bigger experience. For example, on my vacation to the beach, I went boogie boarding. I would write about my boogie boarding experience: where I am, who was there, what happened, and how I felt. This story would NOT include everything that happened at the beach that day.
To help your child at home, you can imitate this process by asking specific questions about their day. Have them zoom in on a small moment in time and always remind them that anything can become a story!
Children tell the story of their sketches (no words yet!) to their friends to practice verbalizing their story in sequence

Math
In Math, the children have been exploring manipulatives, counting in sequence on a number line, counting objects and representing them in pictures, and organizing items into ten frames. They have been having a great time collaborating in math workshop in both small groups and partnerships.
Social Studies
In Social Studies we have been discussing Unit 1: Rules and Laws. In this unit we are learning why laws and rules are necessary. We are also talking about ways to stay “on track”. Staying “on track” is following the rules in school. Together, we made our own class rules and signed the document as a promise to honor them during our year together in first grade.
Fundations
Events
We had a great time on our Walking Trip to Woodmere Middle School on September 17th! The children entered a 6th grade classroom and learned about the U.S Constitution while working with a 6th grade buddy!
We celebrated Pep Rally at FECC on Thursday, September 20th. Athletes from Hewlett High School's Volleyball, Soccer, Tennis, Football and Cheerleading Teams came to talk to us about their upcoming games, the mindset you need for playing sports, and even put on a show while we cheered them on! GO BULLDOGS!
