Fascinating Friction-

...and the Joints in Your Body!

Ball and Socket Activity!

Materials Needed: 2 toilet paper or paper towel holders, one ping-pong ball, 12 inches of tape, and 12 inches of string/yarn.

Challenge: Your challenge is to make a ball and socket joint, using only the materials above. Your engineered item MUST be able to move freely. Your team only has 15 minutes to design and create your ball and socket joint.

Ball and Socket Extension Activity!

As a team, create a Google Drawing. Draw the ball and socket that you created, labeling where the bones are, the ligaments, and the ball and socket. Include a text box indicating how you could have improved your design next time. (You only have 8 minutes to complete this!)

Hinge Joint Activity!

Materials Needed: two wooden blocks, 2 rubber bands (you can use up to 4), and one additional item of your choice (with teacher approval).

Challenge: Your challenge is to make a hinge joint, using only the materials above. Your engineered item MUST be able to move freely, and the bones/boards may NOT touch. Your team only has 15 minutes to design and create your ball and socket joint.
