Principal's Perspective
It's hard to believe that November is here. The recent temperatures have certainly provided a strong reminder that winter is not far away. Please remember to use the cooler weather to help in preparing your children for the upcoming winter. We will be going outside for recess every day that we can!
Our October at Falcon Ridge was filled with many highlights. Here are just a few:
- Our 4th graders participated in a day-long Kindness Retreat, sponsored by our Falcon Ridge PAC.
- For Homecoming, we had a red and black dress up day, and we were able to see the parade go past Falcon Ridge.
- Viktor, the mascot for the Minnesota Vikings, gave an important anti-bullying message to our entire building.
November will be another big month as we look forward to a very important Veterans Day celebration, our Apex Fun Run Fundraiser, fall Parent/Teacher Conferences and Book Fair on November 14, 15, and 21, and our Thanksgiving Food Drive.
If you haven't yet signed up for a Parent/Teacher Conference time slot, you can sign up by clicking on this PTCFast link.
Sincerely,
David Giesen

Staff Perspective - Amy Borwege, Grade 4 Teacher
This past September, Falcon Ridge fourth graders across the school district participated in an economics unit selling homecoming buttons in anticipation of our New Prague Homecoming festivities. Students moved through a business model, including design, advertising, production, sales, accounting, and finally analyzing the success of their business. They learned about supply and demand, profit and loss, and what it takes to be an entrepreneur. We heard from local business owners with various products and trades.
As part of our project, fourth graders determined where they would like to see their overall profits go, finding an organization that was important to them. This year, we will donate over $500 to the New Prague Veteran’s Memorial. The organizer of the initiative came in to discuss their team’s vision, mission, and design with our fourth graders, so they could see first-hand where their efforts will go. In addition, we will donate $24 to KIVA, partially funding an entrepreneur's dream of starting a pig farm in the Philippines. Having the students see their impact locally and globally provides them with the empathy they need to be a positive impact on our community and world.
This project wouldn’t be what it is without the generous help and support from many people. A special thank you to Trevor Schwirtz, Kathy Pecholt, and Alycia Kocina for sharing their businesses with us and allowing us to ask complicated questions. We are incredibly thankful to the Carlson Family for making the buttons, and to Raven Stream Elementary for loaning us their button press.
