Counselor's Corner
Locke Hill Elementary - February Edition
We welcome the month of February as we celebrate acts of kindness and self-care. February is a month that helps us encourage our students to show compassion towards others and themselves. This month, we will focus on activities that helps students take time to relax, breathe, and demonstrate mindfulness.
MINDFUL BREATHING TECHNIQUES
Check out the videos below for breathing strategies. Sometimes stopping to take some deep breaths can help us clear our minds and refocus our attention. There is also a printable that you can use to add to your tool kit.

Calming Glitter Bottles
Calming bottles are always a favorite with our students! They are easy to make and can be made in lots of different ways. Check out the videos for some ideas to try at home. Glitter bottles remind students to "settle their glitter." Shake them up and take deep breaths as you watch the glitter settle. They are also pretty to look at and can help take your mind off of what is making you feel upset.

MINDFUL MOVEMENT
When our bodies feel tense it can be helpful to stop what we are doing and try some mindful movements. This allows for us to release tension that we may have and let it go. Check out the videos below for some mindful movements that you can try at home with your students.

Wear a POSITIVE shirt!
We are upholding this annual tradition of celebrating kindness because we know everyone can use more kindness in their lives. Scientific evidence shows us the positive effects of doing kind acts for others as well as receiving or even witnessing kindness. Even the smallest act of kindness can change a life.
