What We're Learning
Reading: In fiction stories, characters change. We are going to be using our inferring skills to tell how a character changes within a story, and why. We can use examples from the text (evidence) and put it together with our background knowledge (schema) to INFER what causes a character's feelings to change from the beginning to the end of a story. You can reinforce these skills at home by asking questions like "How did s/he feel at the beginning? How do you know? How did s/he feel at the end? How do you know?"
Math: Cha-ching! It's time for money! Students are going to be learning all about coins: pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. We are going to learn how our skip-counting and count-on skills can help us to count money. How can you help at home? Have students sort the change in the change jar, or count the change when you go to the grocery store!
Science: It is a first-grade teacher's most favorite time of year! Our science units will be revolving around living/nonliving, basic needs, animal characteristics, interdependence, and life cycles. We tie ALL of these units together while studying...CHICKS! Yes, that's right! This week, we received 15 fertilized chick eggs. We will study in-depth the life cycle of a chicken and observe our eggs until they hatch. Then we will keep the chicks in our classroom for a few weeks and continue to observe them as they grow. We are SO excited! If you have any questions about this project, please do not hesitate to contact me.
