Greetings Shaw Montessori,

By now you should have received the following communication from our district:

“Student attendance in the online model is important to your child’s success in school, just like in-person classes, and students are expected to attend each day Monday through Friday. Monday is a day of learning, and all students should participate on Monday mornings by either connecting with their teachers for live lessons, or by participating in small groups or one-to-one instruction with their teachers.

On Monday, February 1, school principals will communicate with parents and share the school’s expectations on how students should be connecting with teachers and completing assignments on Mondays. As a reminder, if your child is absent from school Monday through Friday, a parent or guardian must call the school office to report your child absent.”

As part of our district’s commitment to provide equity, consistency and improve attendance we will be making changes to our Monday schedule beginning the week of February 8th by providing synchronous instruction in the morning. Teachers will be conducting in person instruction in real time, with students either in whole group, small group, or 1:1 settings. Students that are not working directly with their teachers on Monday morning will still be expected to take part in asynchronous teacher assigned lessons available in their Google classrooms. Asynchronous instruction should still occur in the afternoon.

Your child’s teacher will be contacting you regarding their schedule and plan for Monday learning for your child.

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this change.

All the best,

Principal Engdall

Nix the Negativity

The news is filled with stories of sickness, job loss, escaped convicts and homicide. Seeing all this negativity impacts our ability to be productive and engaged. We may want to withdraw and have difficulty getting motivated. To make matters worse, negativity is highly contagious. It takes seeing 5 acts of positivity to help us put less focus on 1 negative act.

Humanity- focus on stories that remind you of the goodness of people. Thank others if you see an act of kindness. This could be telling your kids thanks for cleaning their rooms without being asked. It could be calling to check in with a homebound neighbor.

Time- If you are working from home, you are saving your commute time. Block out time on your calendar for some me-time. Spend that time in a way that will bring you joy. Take a walk, phone a friend, enjoy a peaceful cup of coffee.

Serendipity- finding the positive side effects of an event. The pollution levels are down around the world, we are spending more time with our families and building those relationships, we are finding we are more capable of adapting to changes (working from home, online school, learning new computer skills) than we thought.

Generosity- being generous, giving of your time, resources and knowledge will help increase your self-esteem and boost your immune system

Humor- Laughter relaxes your body, boosts your immune system and burns calories. Watch funny shows, tell jokes, find funny memes.

Laugh. Give. Appreciate. Acknowledge. Support. Let’s get rid of the negativity and look for the positives in every situation instead!

Hello and Happy New Year!

This year has brought a lot of pivoting and adjustment from everyone. PTA general meetings have been on hold since last October; however, the PTA Board continues to operate under State PTA Guidelines. The upcoming virtual meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, March 24th at 6PM and Wednesday, May 12th at 6PM. Please join us to discuss teacher appreciation, graduation, elections and closing out the school year. An email summary of financial position will be sent to the members on Wednesday, February 24th.

Due to the hardships of this year, The PTA Board and School Administrators have opted to put a hold on fundraising in order to minimize the pressure or expectations on parents.

We will continue financial assistance to the teachers through the supplies fund to compensate them for additional materials needed.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions.
