  • Development of plot, characters, and setting
  • Appropriate illustrations that go with the plot
  • Has to have a distinguished genre in order to receive an award (for that specific award)
  • Make a noticeable contribution to children's literature
  • Engaging and distinctive use of language
  • Not dependent on any other media
  • Of interest to children
