January, 2019 Words for the Wise
From All of Us to YOU! HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Set Sail for New Adventures!
Ahoy Owen Families,
On behalf of the Owen Staff, we hope the new year brings you much joy, health, and laughter!
We are about to embark on the second half of our journey with our passengers (students). It is a perfect time to reflect and celebrate the successes achieved and the reasons why. It is also a perfect time to set new goals that will continue to challenge us to achieve new skills and knowledge that will last a lifetime.
As I look back to the first half of our journey and all the things that were accomplished, it makes me believe even stronger in the power of our work together. Regardless of the challenges we may encounter, with your home support and our experienced Owen crew members, we will ensure each passenger will find his or her treasure at our final destination! A treasure chest full of academic success, problem-solving and collaborative skills, strong positive character traits, a strong morale compass, positive self-worth, and confidence. A treasure chest that your child will be proud of the results of his or her effort and hard work.
Enjoy the remainder of the January Captain's Log. If you have any questions, please contact us.
Kids First,
Captain Earlenbaugh
CHARACTER COUNTS! Everywhere and all the time!
Starting with character education and moving to character action is not a year-long journey, it is a life-long journey. We want our passengers to learn about character education, but more importantly we want our passengers to apply these character traits in their daily lives.
Thank you for teaming with us in this journey by looking for your child applying these positive characteristics in their lives outside of school. We'd enjoy hearing from you.

Students Earning a Positive Referral
Congratulations to the following Owl-Standing Owen Owls for earning a Positive Referral since the last newsletter for demonstrating exceptional character. Any staff member may acknowledge a student who exemplifies great character on a regular basis. We encourage you to celebrate this with your child. We recognize each student during morning announcements. He or she will sign our Kids for Character Positive Referral Book and place a personal Owl-Standing Owl of Character on our Kids for Character Tree in the main hallway.
Each quarter students who earn two or more Positive Referrals and have no office behavioral referrals have a special celebration that is planned by our Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports Team (PBIS Team).

2019 Illinois 5Essentials Survey Open until Feb. 15th.
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey is administered online by the University of Chicago, on behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education. Annually, parents, guardians, teachers, and 4th-12th grade students across Illinois are asked to complete the survey. The results from the survey are used as one of the ratings for the Owen School Report Card.
As a parent, your perspective on your child's education at Owen is important. We want to celebrate the great things happening and also continue to look for ways to continually improve. The fourth and fifth graders, as well as the teachers, will be completing the survey in January.
The State requires a minimum response of 20% of our parents and guardians to complete the survey. As you can see below we have 35% of our families completing it so far. Since the implementation of this survey, the Owen community has had a 45-50% response rate. Thank you for taking five minutes to complete it. If you have children attending more than one school, we ask that you complete the survey for each school. All survey responses will be kept confidential.
Please click the links below for the "Easy as 1-2-3" form that provides specific directions for you and the link to the survey. Before break the classrooms that had the most "Easy as 1-2-3" forms returned were Mrs. Bree, Ms. Baugh and Mrs. Vlcek. The classroom with the most signed and returned forms will earn a pizza party. Mrs. Bree's class earned it last year.
If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher or the office.
2017-2018 Owen Report Card
I'll do my best to summarize the complicated process for you. The designations are based on a school's Index Score which is calculated from multiple indicators. Elementary and middle schools have six indicators and each one is assigned a score of 0-100 and are weighted differently.
10% English Language Arts Proficiency
10% Math Proficiency
5% English Language Proficiency
50% Growth
20% Chronic Absenteeism
5% 5Essentials Climate Survey
ISBE calculates each elementary and middle school's indicator scores and weightings to calculate a school's INDEX SCORE. The Index Scores are compared against state-wide results where ISBE assigns one of four following summative designations. They are Lowest Performing (lowest 5%), Under-performing, Commendable and Exemplary (top 10%).
Owen's 2017-18 Index Score was 75.36, or Commendable.
This year the Index Score for Exemplary was 80.94 or above.
The link below will take to you Owen's Report Card for the 2017-18 school year.
