Hamilton Boys' High School

March 2020

A belated and warm welcome to 2020 for our new International students, our returning students, their caregivers, homestay families and parents.

I would like to extend our sympathy and support to our families overseas whose lives have been dramatically affected by Covid-19 and to the many families who have had to cancel or postpone travel. At this stage, New Zealand has only 28 cases of Covid-19 and they can all be linked to recent international travel. There are no community-based outbreaks. The number of Covid-19 cases will no doubt increase but, with travel restrictions and strict self-isolation policies now in place, we expect the spread of the virus to remain manageable.

All major school and community events have now been postponed or cancelled and our students and families are grappling with the ramifications and disappoint of these cancellations. In the months to come, it is important that we continue to be kind, supportive and sensible towards each other and this challenging situation.

In the unlikely event that schools close for a short period of time, our boarding students will go to their set leave homestays. All our set leave and full-time homestay families will continue to support and care for our international students.

For many of our international students, it will be the first time they are unable to return home during a term break. We will encourage and support our International students to plan some fun activities and create opportunities to spend time with International students from our neighbouring schools.

I hope you enjoy looking at the photos from our action-packed summer.

Academic Excellence

Congratulations to Marshall Yeung for achieving NCEA Level 2 with an Excellence Endorsement. It's an extraordinary achievement for a student whose first language is not English and we are very proud of him.
Congratulations to Jadon Eng and Bosco Cheng for gaining Excellence endorsements for NCEA Level 1.

Sporting Excellence

Rowing in the U18 Novice 8's and Novice 4's this year, Ben RUSSELL and his crew have achieved extraordinary success. In the U18 Novice 8's, his crew came first in every regatta since the season began last year.

Athletics Day

Our school Athletics Championships were held at Porritt Stadium on the 26th of February.

It was wonderful to see so many of our International boys enthusiastically competing in the championship and non-championship events.

International Rugby

For the past 2 weeks, the Waikato Rugby Academy has been hosting players from universities in Japan. Our International rugby boys were invited to play with the Japanese players in their games against Morrinsville U21 and Marist Old Boys U21. Both games were tough encounters but the University players and our boys were victorious in both games. It was a great experience for everyone involved.
