First Letter To Online Students
Hello MATH 102 online student. I am sending this out to you because I found your name and email address in my class list. I look forward to a good, successful semester with you. The first thing I want to make sure of is that you are in the proper class. You should only be taking this class if you satisfy one of these conditions:
*You already took (and passed) MATH 100 at TMCC
*You transferred from another college and this is the class you should be in
If you are unsure of whether you should be in this class, contact me immediately. Otherwise, if you are in the right place, here’s what comes next…
Here is some important information for you:
You should have gone to the bookstore and received a book AND a set of disks for this class. If they try to give you a set of disks that has already been opened, tell them you need disks that have not been used yet. You MUST have the disks in order to proceed with this class. (If you took MATH 102 previously, you should use the same disks and access code as before. You may NOT use the same ones as in MATH 100.)
I will always be communicating with you via your TMCC email address. Every student at TMCC has a free email account with TMCC. If you don’t know your username or password, please contact the tech. dept. and get it immediately.
Also it is important for you to know that you will take your chapter tests and final test here at TMCC with me. (You will notify me to arrange a time for each test.) These tests are traditional paper tests, but will have the exact same types of problems as you have been doing on Hawkes. As a matter of fact, I print them off from the Hawkes program.
Now the next thing you need to do, if you haven’t done so already, is to get on Jenzabar and find our class. In the upper right where it says “DO THIS FIRST!” please open and print the course checklist. Now view all of the items in the “Important Information” section. Read through the syllabus carefully and make sure you understand all of the policies and important dates for this class.
If you don’t have access to a computer off campus, you should not be taking an online class. However, if you need to use a computer while you are on campus, there are many available and they have the Hawkes programs already loaded on them.
Once you have your access code and have enrolled in my Hawkes grade book, you are ready to begin!
The first assignment is to email me using your TMCC account to establish our communication link that we will be using for the entire semester.
The second assignment is to complete the Online Student Questionnaire. Just click on that link – you will find it at the bottom right-hand side of Jenzabar (under Helpful Links).
The third assignment is to take the Pretest. The instructions for taking the Pretest are listed in Jenzabar.
After you finish the Pretest, you are ready to begin working on the lessons. Generally, when you do a lesson, you should do it in three steps:
1) Start with the “Instruct” mode to learn the new material
2) Go to the “Practice” mode and practice the problems until you have it down
3) Now go to the “Certify” mode and certify your lesson.
The test dates are listed in the syllabus. These are the deadlines. It is perfectly fine for you to take tests prior to those dates. Just don’t wait until after the dates, or you will be penalized. If you finish all of the lessons and tests early, then you are done with this class! Here’s a hint about taking the tests. Contact me one or two days ahead of time to let me know when you are ready to come and take a test. That way if there are any complications with the date or time, we’ll have time to work it out.
**** Again, please contact me as soon as possible if you have any questions.
***** One last note – It is far more difficult to take a math class online than to take it face-to-face. In fact, I would advise you to switch to one of the face-to-face classes if it fits in your schedule. You must be self-motivated and willing to put in many hours of work in order to make it through this course. Do NOT allow yourself to fall behind or you will find it virtually impossible to catch up. Don’t put off asking for help. Don’t wait to get started, because your first test is coming very soon, and your first lesson is due even sooner yet! As soon as you encounter a problem, contact me or go to our MathLab, which is located in room 105. There, you will find tutors (dependent on available funding) who are anxious to help you out. Good luck!
