A Peek at Our Week!
Week of August 21, 2017
MATH:
2.1 - In our first math unit students are learning to understand place value. We are modeling, reading, and writing numbers to 1000 using base ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. We will learn to skip count by 5s, 10s, and 100s within 1000. We will compare two three-digit numbers using <, =, and >, and record the results of the comparisons. We will also draw picture graphs and bar graphs to represent data and use the data to solve problems presented in the graphs.
2.2 - Homework will begin this week. The focus will be on basic math facts. Your students will bring home some ideas for ways to practice on Monday. I ask that you practice for about 10 minutes every evening. Thanks!
3.1 - In our first math unit the students are developing and using an understanding of place value to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. In this unit we will also learn to fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction.
READING:
In our first reading unit our goal is to read with fluency, stamina, and comprehension. Students will learn strategies to tackle difficult words. As we read we will also discover some special techniques that our favorite authors use and apply them in our own writing.
WRITING:
In our first writing unit we are improving our narrative writing. Students are learning to stretch out and magnify their small moment stories by adding details and strong beginnings and endings. We will discover craft moves that authors use to create powerful stories and learn to add these techniques as we write.
SCIENCE:
This week students learned all about the 3 states of matter by investigating what happened to their ice cubes when we applied heat. They also had the opportunity to use their knowledge of physical properties to help describe hidden objects to their to classmates.
Next week, we will continue exploring states and property of matter by observing various types of salts. Students will become familiar with salt flats and use their knowledge from last week to help determine how salt flats are formed and if they are reversible.
Solar Eclipse - August 21
All CCE students will be indoors during the eclipse. They will participate in engaging activities in their classrooms as they learn about this exciting event! If you plan to keep your child home on this day, or check him/her out early, we are requesting that you let your child's homeroom teacher know in advance. All student absences and/or early check-outs on this day will be counted as excused. Parents who wish to pick up their students are requested to do so before 12:30 p.m. so that there is ample time to get safely home or to an eclipse viewing location.
Although Atlanta will not experience a total eclipse, the darkest part of the event is scheduled to occur during the dismissal process of elementary school students. As a result, Fulton County Schools is delaying release of elementary school students until 3:05 p.m. This is a 45-minute delay.
Important Changes
Please look in your child’s homework folder today for a letter printed on hot pink paper. This letter explains important changes that have been made to the F & P reading assessment. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to reach out to our literacy coach, Sarah Jones at jonessj@fultonschools.org. Thank you!
Curriculum Night
We hope you will be able to attend Curriculum Night on August 28 at 6:00 pm. You will get a glimpse into your child’s day as you visit his/her homeroom/reading and math classes. The teachers will review classroom and school policies, procedures and routines at that time. We hope all of our parents can attend!
