Recycling collection Saturday Jan 9th, 2021
The DADS Group is collecting CRV recyclables this Saturday, Jan 9, from 8-10am in the ESS parking lot. Bring your beverage recyclables like aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and glass bottles, and your face covering. This is an easy way to help us raise money for the school.
Did you know we recognize the student in each grade who brings the most recyclables? If you'd like to participate please count your cans and bottles and write the number on a small piece of paper with your name, grade, and teacher.

SCHOOL PORTRAIT AND YEARBOOK PHOTO INFORMATION
Sumner Photography has extended their ordering due date for PVES families to Friday, January 15! All families who order a photo package by January 15 will receive free shipping to the school and will be able to choose which pose will be in this year's PVES yearbook. If no package is ordered or pose chosen by a student's family by the deadline, Sumner will select a pose to be used in the 2020-2021 yearbook.
If you were not able to make it to either one of Sumner's portrait sessions, not to worry! You may still submit a portrait of your student for inclusion in this year's yearbook. Photos may be submitted to parkvillageyearbook@gmail.com and must adhere to the following guidelines:
*photo must be chest up only

“The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes.” William James
Happy New Year! We hope you are starting off this year happy, healthy and with a positive outlook. You may have read “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor Frankl. In this book he teaches us by his life experience that, though life is hard, how one thinks about his circumstances is far more important than the situation itself. Frankl’s ability to choose his own attitude, no matter how bad the conditions, helped Frankl to survive war and all its atrocities. He calls the ability to choose our own attitude, in any given circumstance, “the last of the human freedoms.”
Researchers at Harvard University concluded from a study conducted a few years ago that up to 85% of our success in life is due to attitude, while the other 15% is due to ability. That can be encouraging for all of us. Our attitude comes from what we say to ourselves about life and everyday happenings. Our self-talk is ultimately of our choosing. Our attitudes are the way we choose to view life. And the way we approach it will determine our success or failure.
Three important choices we can make are:
1. Think with an open mind. When we think we know all the answers or that our view is the only possible one we are not open.
2. Think for yourself. So many things influence our thinking: the media, advertising, TV, friends, family etc. We can weigh it all and choose our own thoughts with our own beliefs, values and priorities. Parents have a huge impact on children’s thinking.
3. Think constructively. People who succeed in life don’t think they can; they believe they can.
Give your children the gift of a great, can do, attitude! It will make a difference in their lives.
“Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you, as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you, as by the way your mind looks at what happens.” John Homer Miller
Sending you all best wishes,

Celebrate with a “Birthday Book” Donation to the Library
The school library’s Birthday Book donation program is an opportunity to celebrate your child’s birthday (or another milestone occasion) by choosing a book for the library's collection. Your gift will benefit PVES students for years to come!
After the donated book arrives at the library, a special bookplate with your child's name and birthday age will be placed inside the front cover. I will also reserve the book so your child can be the first student to check it out from the library (unless they choose not to).
This program is completely optional, but new books are greatly appreciated by the students, teachers, and me! Thank you very much! -- Mrs. Fleming, Librarian
How the Birthday Book Club works:
1) Choose a book from the Park Village ES Library Wish List on Amazon any time. There are a wide variety of preselected books to choose from. You can ship the books directly to the library.
2) Complete the Birthday Book Donation form online so I know what to expect.
3) When the book is ready for check-out, your child can be the first one to borrow it.
After the book is returned, it becomes part of the library collection for other students to enjoy.
Thank you for supporting reading and learning at Park Village!
No Place For Hate
We are excited to share with you that Park Village was officially designated as a No Place For Hate school again this year! This past week teachers kicked off this valuable program with students. As a reminder, The “No Place For Hate” program was created by the national Anti Defamation League (ADL) organization and was developed to organize schools to work together and develop projects that enhance the appreciation of diversity and foster harmony amongst diverse groups. The campaign empowers schools to promote respect for individual and group differences while challenging prejudice and bigotry. Each year we will start by having all staff and students take the No Place For Hate Pledge seen here.
I PROMISE to do my best to treat everyone fairly.
I PROMISE to do my best to be kind to everyone -even if they are not like me.
IF I SEE someone being hurt or bullied, I will tell a teacher
EVERYONE should be able to feel safe and happy in school.
I WANT OUR SCHOOL to be No Place For Hate.
I PROMISE to abide by and uphold the No Place For Hate Pledge.
We will also be implementing three school wide activities throughout the year. The goal of these activities are to continue to find ways of building a more inclusive and respectful campus and to empower students to take a stand against hate and bullying. In addition to school wide activities, we have created a “Virtual Inclusion Lounge” for parents and students to access throughout the year. We hope students and parents will explore these resources together to have discussions around the topics of diversity, tolerance, and acceptance. Click here to access the “Virtual Inclusion Lounge” If you want to learn more about the No Place for Hate program in San Diego visit. https://sandiego.adl.org/no-place-for-hate. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Your “No Place For Hate” Team Members
