Glenealy School Newsletter
24th October 2019
Message from Chris
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We have reached the end of another exciting week with a huge amount going on in school.
Thank you to all the families who attended the Book Character Parade last Friday in celebration of Mini Book Week. It was fabulous to see the incredible costumes on display and have a real celebration of reading. Thank you to the parents and children for putting such a huge amount of effort into the parade! I know the children also really enjoyed the various Book Week competitions throughout the week - the children were very excited. You can find pictures of those winning costumes above in the Newsletter.
I would also like to let you all know that, following our School Council members election, Nigel Reeves has been elected to the Glenealy School Council. We would like to thank all parents for their nominations, and for taking the time to vote for the parent members. We are sure Nigel will do an excellent job representing parents within the Council.
Another huge success this week was the Mathematics Parent Circles held on Wednesday. Parents found out more about our maths curriculum and then spent some time in classes seeing maths in action. The feedback from the session was extremely positive. With many of our parent workshops, in order to ensure they are effective, we do have to limit numbers. If you were not able to attend on this occasion, we would like to reassure you that we will be holding further opportunities later in the year. Those who signed up on this occasion, but were not able to attend, will be prioritised for the next Parent Circle. As always, I would like to thank parents for their support.
As a final reminder, tomorrow we have our Redress Day where we will be raising awareness about the textile industry. Children are invited to come to school wearing old, favourite or repaired clothes.
As Diwali is being celebrated this weekend, we invite any children who wish to wear Indian traditional or themed clothes may do so tomorrow as well. We wish all our families who are celebrating this Festival of Light, a very Happy Diwali!
Best Regards,
Chris

Tetrapak Recycling
On Monday, we collected 43 kg of tetra paks.
The next collection will be on MONDAY 2nd DECEMBER before school.
Huge thanks to all the kids and families who brought their packaging, our recycler relies on schools as collection points. A special mention to 3K, the class with the highest number of families participating. We wonder which class will have the highest uptake next time?
Please cut open, wash and dry your tetrapaks ready for the next collection. Take time to watch the video link to see how to prepare your tetra paks.

GLENEALY SCHOOL FAIR – FRIDAY 22nd NOVEMBER – 5:00 pm TO 8:30 pm
The Glenealy School Fair is the only place to be on Friday 22nd November so make sure the date is firmly fixed in your diary. The Fair brings the whole community together and we need the help of every family to make it work. How can I help?
Volunteer – we need help to set-up and run the games and stalls on the night of the Fair. Please sign up using the Google Form here.
Volunteer your teenager – if you have older students at home, we’d love to have them come and help out on our games stalls.
Donate – time for a clear-out! The week of the Fair we will be collecting for:
- Second Hand Book Stall - Second hand books for Adults and Children are welcome (please no VCR tapes, CD’s or DVD’s).
- Pre-loved Accessories Stall - Our Pre-loved Accessories Stall is back looking for gently used, pre-loved handbags, scarves, sunglasses, belts & jewellery – nothing high value, but good condition, costume accessories welcome.
School Uniform – This year the Fair will see the addition of a gently used uniform stall. We welcome your donations of gently used school uniform for resale at the Fair.
Water or wine - A new Adult only game for this years fair. We are asking for donations of new bottles of wine, champagne, olive oil, juice, cordial, vinegar, Perrier etc. All bottles must be in date and placed in an open wine bag. The game works in a similar way to a lucky dip. Everyone's a winner but who knows what you will get.
All donations can be left at the Glenealy Money Sales Stand in the playground the mornings and afternoons the week of the Fair.
Year 3 Fundraiser - This Friday 25th October 3:00 pm
Tricks, Treats & Spooky Sweets - Join Year 3 for their Halloween inspired fundraiser on Friday 25th at 3:00 pm in the playground. Year 3 is keen to keep it green so bring your own container (lunch boxes are great for this) so that you can take your ghoulishly great goodies home.
Box of Hope
Box of Hope
The Box of Hope is an annual charity project aimed at providing useful/educational gifts to underprivileged children in Hong Kong & Asia. Glenealy School has been supporting this charity for some years now, helping to bring a big smile to the children's faces. What you have to do is fill a shoe box with some thoughtful gifts and then wrap it with some colourful or nice paper.
Details of the items and how to pack the box can be found on a special label that the Year 6 Events Team have distributed to each class today. Please check with your child that they have received this label.
To find our more about Box of Hope and to gain some ideas about what to put in your box you may check out this video: https://youtu.be/BR1VnwTRfHE
The drop off dates for the completed boxes are Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th November. When you bring your Box Of Hope to school, please drop them off to the Music Room before school (between 8:15 am and 8:30 am).
If you need more information, please go to the Box Of Hope website here

This October we are supporting local charity Redress in their environmental awareness campaign ‘Get Redressed Month’. Through education, Redress’ goal is to help reduce textile waste, address over- consumption and educate students about the environmental impact of the fashion industry.

- The oldest item in their wardrobe
- Hand-me-downs
- Homemade or upcycled clothes
