Creating strong home school connections for student success!
Happy 2020
I hope that everyone had a happy and restful break and was able to spend quality time together as a family. I can not believe it's 2020 and I don't have a flying car or robot maid like on the Jetsons! Well, we may not have flying cars...yet, but we are certainly flying through this school year as we start the second semester. The second semester will be full of new learning and exciting things for parents and students to participate in. I encourage you to check your Wednesday folders and our PTO website for wonderful opportunities to get involved at school.
As we venture into a new year, there is always the urge to make resolutions or set goals. As a school our goal is just to continue to get better for every student everyday. To do this, we need your support, ideas and feedback. For the remainder of January(14th, 21st and 28th), I will be hosting Tuesday Talks from 7:45-8:45 every Tuesday morning. This is a time where I will be available to all that pop in to hear your ideas and thoughts about how we can continue to make our school better. During this time, we will be in a small group setting talking and sharing over coffee. I will ask that you not use this time to discuss individual concerns, please continue to schedule parent conferences as the need comes up for individual concerns.

Semester Budget Updates
Parent lunch with students
We will be working to adjust our lunch procedures related to when parents can visit for lunch. During the weeks of January 13th thru January 24th, our campus will be closed for parent drop in at lunch. We are finding it difficult to monitor parent drop in and we will be taking some time to review our policies and look at procedural changes. Below are a few of the concerns we are having with parents visiting at lunch:
- Parents that come everyday: Lunch time with students is a special occasion. We can not accommodate the parent(s) that want to have lunch with their children everyday
- Space: We have limited space in our cafeteria and while we have tried to have dedicated tables for parents, we do not have seating to accommodate the daily parents and do not have a separate area to make available.
- Cell Phone Usage: Cell phone use in the cafeteria has become a concern. Issues are caused when a parent allows their child to play video games on their phone, when parents take phone calls in the cafeteria or when parent want to take pictures or video in the cafeteria
- Parents overstepping: Parent are not at lunch to redirect students or staff. Parent are there only for their child. If there is an issue or concern with another child, that should be brought to staff's attention and parents should not attempt to handle it themselves. If there is an issue with a staff member that should be brought to my attention.
We will be discussing ideas as a staff, SDMC, and I am happy to hear your ideas on how to make this work for all. I know that kids love when their parents come to have lunch with them and it is not my intent to remove this option. One of the ideas that we'd like to explore is a way for parents to make online reservations to come to lunch. This would help tremendously with seating. If this is something you think you can help us with, I would love to hear from you.
New Parking Lot Signs
Huge shout out to PTO for purchasing new signs for our visitors lot. We have needed more visual communication to continue help with parking and student drop off. Pictures are included below of the two types of signs.
- Two signs indicate no student drop off or pick up. One is placed at the entrance to the visitors lot and one is placed at the white striped areas at the to of the lot. This to communicate that students should not be dropped off or picked up in this area. You are still able to park in a space and walk up to get your child. We will not send children out to the parking lot to you.
- The no parking sign indicates no parking along the red or on the white stripped area at the top of the visitors lot.
You will also see that we have extended the cones further down Jason. There are three safety concerns we are using the cones to help correct:
- When exciting the visitors parking lot, you must make a right turn; this keeps the flow of traffic moving
- When entering the Jason loop you should not turn left into the loop. This cuts into the line of parents waiting to enter the loop
- Jason street is a no-U turn area, please do not make U-turns in the middle of the street as it is illegal and has caused numerous issues with traffic and near accidents.
