What is the difference between a riot, an uprising or a protest? It depends on the outcome and who you ask. And that's not to mention the history of massacres perpetrated by white supremacists which may also be termed riots.

The Wilmington Massacre of 1898
On Nov. 10, 1898, white supremacists murdered African Americans in Wilmington, North Carolina and deposed the elected Reconstruction era government in a coup d’etat. A successful insurrection and precursor to January 6, 2021.

Stuff You Missed in History Class: Zoot Suit Riots
The word “riot” here is really a misnomer. This conflict wasn’t so much about property damage as it was about attacking people. It also wasn’t really about the zoot suits – although they had come to symbolize A LOT in Los Angeles when this happened.
