From the Principal's Desk...

Dear Highview Families,

This was such a wonderful week for us here at Highview! Our fourth-grade students performed in their Spring Concert on Wednesday. It was a beautiful tribute to the amazing work our young musicians have done this year. Kudos to Mr. Brett, Ms. Cokeley, Mr. Miller, and our entire Nanuet Music Department for a successful concert!

On Thursday, we had our first-ever Reading Under the Stars Knight. Thank you to our Elementary PTA for planning this exciting event for our families. Many thanks to our families who joined us for a night of reading and enjoying one another's company under the stars!

Additionally, class 3MR organized a donation drive for local animal shelters. Please consider donating after reviewing the information linked below.

I hope you and your loved ones have a wonderful long weekend. Happy Memorial Day to all who have served our country!

Sincerely,

Matthew Lutz

Charter Shout-Outs for the Week

On a rotating basis, classroom teachers nominate two students from their classes to receive a Charter Shout-Out. The class charter is a RULER anchor tool used in all classrooms to help students develop expectations for success as learners and members of the community. The Charter Shout-Out gives teachers the opportunity to highlight students who are living up to their classroom charters.

This week, students in Mrs. Amann's, Mrs. Bergling's, Mrs. Banks', and Mrs. Collins' classes received shout-outs and were recognized over morning announcements. Congratulations to Amaya (3KA-not pictured), Michael (3KA), Adrianna (3DB), Samantha (3DB), Teagan (4MB), Lucas (4MB), Karina (4HC), and Jason (4HC). Please see their proud picture below!

Principal's Pride

Being the Principal of Highview Elementary School brings me, Mr. Lutz, a tremendous amount of joy and pride. I am the luckiest person in the world to be able to work with such incredible students, staff, and families.

This week, I would like to offer a huge shout-out and heartfelt THANK YOU to our amazing custodial team here at Highview School. Whether it's moving furniture, accepting large orders, or taking care of our beloved school building, our custodians stand ready to support our students, staff, and families. THANK YOU, custodial crew! Your Highview family appreciates you all!

Highview's H-Games: Wednesday, June 7

Highview’s H-Games are almost here! The event will take place on Wednesday, June 7, 2023. The rain date for the event is Thursday, June 8. During H-Games, third- and fourth-grade students take part in a series of challenging athletic events that require teamwork, problem solving, and critical thinking. Both grades will participate and rotate through the stations with their classes. This special event culminates all of the amazing skills our students have learned in Physical Education this year. H-Games will include challenging events inside the building and outdoors.

  • Grade 3 students and BOCES students will participate in the morning session beginning at 9:45 a.m. and ending at 11:30 a.m.
  • Grade 4 students will participate in the afternoon session beginning at 12:40 p.m. and ending at 2:25 p.m.

Parents and guardians are welcome to join us! Please do not bring younger siblings as this event is for Highview students only.

Please make sure your child dresses appropriately for H-Games. Each child will receive an H-Games T-Shirt courtesy of our Nanuet Elementary PTA. Teachers will distribute these shirts the morning of H-Games. It is important for children to wear comfortable athletic apparel, sunscreen, and sneakers. Please be sure to check the weather report as it can sometimes be hot or unseasonably cool in June.

In an effort to reduce the trash created by empty cups, all students should bring a water bottle. Please be sure to label the water bottle with your child’s first name, last name, and class code. There will be water stations available outdoors so that students can refill their water bottles.

Parking is limited here at Highview Elementary School. We ask that all families park at Grace Baptist Church. Please do not park in the parking lot by the upper playground, as those spots are staff parking spots. We appreciate your attention to this matter.

We look forward to an exciting H-Games event! If you have questions, please contact your child’s classroom teacher or call our Main Office at (845) 627-3460.

Incoming Grade 3 Parent Orientation

It is hard to believe that we are in the month of May. On Tuesday, May 9, we welcomed the parents of students who will enter Grade 3 in September 2023 to an Incoming Grade 3 Parent Orientation. We were thrilled to partner with families to explain the transition to Highview Elementary School. Of course, if any families of our future Highview Knights need support throughout this important transition, we encourage them to contact our Main Office at (845) 627-3460. I have included the slideshow we shared with parents during the orientation below.

Internet Safety

Internet safety is an important topic for us to discuss with children. At Highview, we speak with students about Digital Citizenship and how their interactions online contribute to their Digital Footprint. Included below is a flyer that outlines an Internet Safety Training for parents. Please check it out if it interests you!

Goals and Priorities Update - 2022.2023

During the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, March 28, we presented the amazing work our students have been doing this school year. We highlighted the great gains they have made as readers, writers, mathematicians, and scientists. Additionally, we spoke to the amazing work our staff and students are doing to implement and infuse the RULER approach to Social-Emotional Learning. We are grateful to be able to collaborate with our students and families! Be sure to check out the presentation below.

Arrival/Dismissal Procedures

Please click the link below to access our Arrival/Dismissal Procedures. It is important that we work together to follow these protocols in order to ensure an efficient, safe process for both students and staff. As a reminder, there are no U-turns permitted on Highview Avenue. If you drive your child to school and arrive after 8:45 a.m., you must park at Grace Baptist Church and walk your child to school. It is unsafe to drop off students in the crosswalk on Highview Avenue while buses are unloading. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Highview Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

Bus Safety

We are fortunate to offer universal busing here in the Nanuet Union Free School District. As you know, the safety of our students is our top priority. We have three simple BUS rules:

  • Be a good listener.
  • Use a quiet voice.
  • Stay seated at all times.

Please review these rules with your child and remind them that riding the bus is a privilege, not a right. We need to work together to ensure our students experience a safe and orderly bus ride to and from school. Please note that undesirable or unsafe behavior could result in a loss of bus privileges as determined by the Principal or Assistant Principal. We appreciate your partnership.

Code of Conduct

The Board of Education is committed to providing a safe and orderly school environment where students may receive and district personnel may deliver quality educational experiences without disruption or interference. We ask that you read and review the Code of Conduct for Grades K-4 with your child. Our goal is to ensure students are engaged in learning while making positive contributions to our school community.

Digital Backpack

Each week, documents will be loaded to our Digital Backpack, which is linked to the bottom of the Highview homepage. We encourage you to check the Digital Backpack, which is updated every Friday, to ensure you have updated information on important dates, events, and opportunities being offered to students and families.

Safety and Security Protocols

As you know, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority in the Nanuet Union Free School District. In an effort to ensure our building is safe and secure, we have made some revisions to our visitor policies and procedures at Highview School. The protocols are outlined in the document below.
