Martin Luther King Jr. Day honors the famous American civil rights leader who dedicated his life to achieving equality for people of all colors. Although few kids would question a day off from school, some may wonder why there is an entire day devoted to one man. Dr. King's message of peace and justice touched many Americans. The national holiday that remembers him is a time to learn about history and reflect on some valuable messages that are still highly important and deeply meaningful today.
Tales of the 4th Grade SOMETHING!
In December, they hosted a market to sell handmade wares that they produced mainly with household basics, as well as recycled and preloved items. The market served as the final project of their social studies unit on economics. Our teachers met their goal of inspiring our young scholars to envision using these skills in the future to successfully run their own goods or service businesses.
At the present time, our 4th graders are learning about how energy is stored and used in science. In reading they are analyzing themes that they find in stories. In math they are doing fractions and decimals.
In February, they will go on a ski trip to Cannonsburg Ski Area. This is an amazing opportunity for our students, many of whom have never been on a ski slope! This annual 4th grade event is made possible by the our Physical Education teacher, Mr. Ed Wierenga, our 4th grade teaching staff, as well as many, many donors who have helped over the years to outfit our students with ski gear and warm clothing on the event days.
4th grade is really something! Our 4th graders are having a wonderful school year. It is a great day to be a Godwin Heights Wolverine!

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS improves social emotional competence, academic success, and school climate. It also improves teacher health and wellbeing. It is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable and safe learning environments where everyone thrives.
Schools like Godwin Heights that implement PBIS:
- Use a continuum of evidence-based practices to support student needs
- Engage students, families, and community members to co-create culturally responsive practices
- Regularly check the effectiveness of their practices
- Rely on teams to guide implementation
- Use data to identify strengths, uncover needs, and monitor student progress
- Implement universal screening
- Develop content expertise through coaching and on-going professional development
PBIS is an ongoing commitment to supporting students, educators, and families through systems change. When you implement PBIS well, students experience improved behavioral, social, emotional, and academic outcomes; schools and programs reduce their use of exclusionary discipline practices and improve their overall climate.
CYCLE 2 of MAP & ACADIENCE TESTING
What does MAP test measure?
A MAP assessment measures a student’s proficiency in math, literacy, and science against grade-level standards. Based on a student’s current achievement results, MAP also predicts (with guidance from a teacher) how much growth a student should achieve over the coming year. One important way of measuring this is to determine what percentage of students met or exceeded growth targets.
What does an Acadience test measure?
Acadience Reading Diagnostic testing is a set of untimed measures that are administered individually to understand the reading skills of students in grades K–6, or for older students who are reading well below their grade level.

Attendance Policy
The normal attendance expectations for any given child in the Kent County Intermediate School District are as follows:
> that a child miss not more than 10 days of Excused Absences for the entire school year,
> that a child have no Unexcused Absences for the entire school year
> that a child have not more than 5 Tardies combined with Leave Early check-outs per semester.
> that a child have no Suspensions for the entire school year.
Godwin Heights Public Schools are held by law to report tardies and absences in excess of the guidelines listed above to the Kent Intermediate School District Office of Truancy and School Attendance-State Law Enforcement Division.
The primary rationale for positive attendance is the strong relationship between student attendance and student achievement. Chronic student absences reduces even the best teacher's ability to provide learning opportunities. Students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance. This relationship between attendance and achievement may appear early in a child's school career. A recent study looking at young children found that absenteeism in kindergarten was associated with negative first grade outcomes such as greater absenteeism in subsequent years and lower achievement in reading, math, and general knowledge.
Poor attendance has serious implications for later outcomes. High school dropouts have been found to exhibit a history of negative behaviors, including high levels of absenteeism throughout their childhood, at higher rates than high school graduates. These differences in absentee rates were observed as early as kindergarten, and students who eventually dropped out of high school missed significantly more days of school in elementary school than their peers who graduated from high school.
