Life During the Depression
Black Tuesday
On twenty-ninth, known in history as Black Tuesday, was the day when the United States stock market crashed. Thirty billion dollars seemed to disappear and sixteen million shares were traded.
Banks
Due to the crash banks would wipe out peoples savings, caused many people to go into debt or become bankrupt.
Many would become unemployed, and even homeless, as companies would lay off employees so they didn't go further into debt
Bonus March
On July 5, 1932 World War One veterans would block the steps of the capitol. They demanded an early payment for a bonus they were previously scheduled to receive. The bonus was voted down later in July and most protesters would leave.
Squatters
Many would go homeless. "Squatters" would make camps to live in or otherwise be shelterless. Some "squatters" would occupy abandoned buildings.
Many would work as pea pickers, setting up camp where they could work to provide what little they could for their families.
