Cell Phones and Headphones
Parents and caregivers may have heard about a "new" cell phone policy instituted this past week. In fact, our policy has not changed, but we are trying to be more consistent with enforcement. Studies show that Having Your Smartphone Nearby Takes a Toll on Your Thinking and "a person's attention is depleted just by having a smartphone in sight." Headphones and air pods also allow students to easily isolate themselves from others when we're trying to build community. To be clear, at Open cell phones should be stored out of sight or turned in to a teacher during each class period. This is in accordance with the RPS Student Code of Responsible Ethics (attached below). Students may continue to use personal devices if they are part of explicit instruction, with the permission of the teacher. Parents and caregivers should also never call or text students during class time unless it is a serious emergency. We ask you to instead call the Office (804-780-4661) to communicate dismissals and pickups. We still allow our students to use their devices during breaks and at lunch, so please plan any communication around our bell schedule. Thank you for helping us, help your students develop habits that support learning.
Check out the photo below of our AWESOME Debate Team, led by Coach Caroline, from this weekend's Tournament in Ashburn, VA. I'm not sure what's going on, but I think they're having fun. Team Captain Drew is reportedly okay :) The next Tournament is February 4 at Clover Hill. Go Stingers!

The deadline for the Medical Science Internship Program (MSIP) is March 3rd, 2023. As you may already know, MSIP is a prestigious and rigorous program that is sponsored by the VCU School of Medicine and designed to introduce high school students to the field of medical research. The internship is a summer program that runs from June 20th to July 28th, 2023. For six weeks, each intern will be paired with a VCU researcher/scientist. Under the guidance of the lab mentor, interns will work on a research project. Interns will work in a lab environment and conduct research by proposing hypotheses, performing experiments, and analyzing results. Interns will typically be working in the lab Monday – Friday and may average 30+ hours a week. During the last week of the program, the interns will present their projects to their peers, friends, family, and the VCU community. The application can be accessed at https://medschool.vcu.edu/research/summer/ along with the list of requirements to apply.
