Language- A way of communication using speech and sounds that is accepted and known by a group of people.
Lingua Franca- A language used in business and politics by people who speak different native languages.
Literary Tradition- A language that is both written and spoken.
Dialect- The way and form by which a language is spoken, spelled and used in different regions.
Ebonics- An English dialect spoken by some African-Americans.
Denglish- A combination of German and English language spoken by some German-Americans.
Creole Language- A language created from a mash-up of an indigenous language and that of a colonizer.
Extinct Language- A language that was formerly used by people regularly but no longer is.
Isogloss- A boundary that separates regions with different predominant languages.
Ideograms- Characters that represent ideas in a specific language, not pronunciations.
