Shepard News & Notes
March 2, 2018
Hello Shepard Families:
Each quarter, the Optimist Club of Deerfield--a volunteer organization that seeks to promote patriotism, good citizenship, and a belief in giving to others--recognizes 3 students from each grade level. These students have demonstrated good citizenship, perseverance, and service to others. The Shepard staff nominated students to receive this award, and then voted on the top three most deserving students at each grade level.
This award is also shared with the staff member each student felt made the biggest difference for them during first quarter. These pictures will proudly be displayed in the center award board in our hall of honor. Please join me in congratulating our students and teachers!

1st/FINAL Posting - Student Advocacy Meeting
In the wake of the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida, many of our students have expressed a desire to share their concerns, wishes, and voice with the adults charged with supporting their safety and well-being. We want to give our students a forum for their advocacy, so we are assembling a committee of students from Shepard and Caruso to plan a community-wide event for the evening of March 14.
I asked our teachers to share names of students that had come forward to them to express interest in speaking out on this topic. I spoke with several students last week to extend an invitation to meet with me, Caruso principal Dr. Brian Bullis, our superintendent Dr. Mike Lubelfeld, and a number of Caruso and Shepard teachers on Tuesday at 3:30pm. We will meet at Shepard, and we’ll support students as they plan a community event to be held on March 14 at 6pm.
Any student interesting in attending the planning meeting is welcome. We will continue to provide updates as this event comes into focus.
2nd/FINAL Posting - Go For Launch Camp in District 113
District 109 middle school students are invited to participate in Go For Launch! Camp June 18-21 at Highland Park High School. This program uses space exploration as a platform to launch student involvement in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math (STEAM). An early registration discount applies if you sign up before 2/14. See all the details here.
