Youth ACT 71

What is ACT 71?

Act 71, which was signed into law in June 2014, requires school entities to:


  1. adopt a youth suicide awareness and prevention policy
  2. provide 4 hours of professional development every 5 years in youth suicide awareness and prevention for educators and school personnel in grades 6-12

Objectives:


  • Discuss the prevalence of suicide
  • Review the Pennsylvania Youth Suicide Prevention Plan
  • Review links to bullying, substance abuse, etc.
  • Identify risk factors, warning signs, protective factors
  • Inventory and recognize resources

Outcomes:

  • Articulate differences between warning signs and risk factors
  • Develop a knowledge of the Pennsylvania Youth Suicide Prevention Plan and Local Youth Suicide Plan
  • Create an action plan specific to your role
