Recent Happenings at NCC
NTHS
National Technical Honor Society students received their NTHS certificates in March. Since NTHS was unable to have a new inductee ceremony with parents, several 2nd year NTHS students helped deliver the certificates to inductees in their classrooms. A total of 87 students are in NTHS this year including 76 new inductees. Induction this year required a 3.0 GPA, 90% attendance and 1-2 letters of recommendation.
In April, NTHS students will be working with Kaleighan Chastain, a student from Oak Park High School, on a Children's PJ and Book Drive for Synergy Children's Center.
SkillsUSA
NCC hosted NW District SkillsUSA Championships in February. Thank you to the competitors,, advisors, judges and schools that contributed to the safety and success of the day!
Program Spotlight: Aviation Technology
Our Program - Aviation Technology
Northland Career Center offers a program for students wanting to explore the aviation maintenance industry.
Aviation Technology prepares students for positions in aircraft maintenance, Airframe and Powerplant Certification and/or an associate degree. Students work on aircraft blueprints, aircraft composites and structures, sheet metal, aircraft systems and components, avionics, safety and human factors.
Our Instructor - Ms. Kari Lasley
Ms. Lasley started as NCC’s Aviation instructor during the 2018-2019 school year.
She spent six years working for the Air National Guard as a mechanic and was stationed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany and Rosecrans Air National Guard Base in St. Joseph, Mo.
Following her service, Ms. Lasley obtained a

Program Spotlight: Diesel Technology
Our Program - Diesel Technology
Northland Career Center offers a two-year program for students wanting to explore the diesel industry.
The Diesel Technology program meets the requirements for NATEF Master Accreditation -the highest level of achievement recognized by the National Automotive Technician Education Foundation. The two-year program prepares students for entry-level diesel technician positions with entry-level skills and knowledge in all phases of diesel equipment repair, preventative maintenance, personal and shop management, parts work for transportation, construction, mobile and stationary diesel equipment applications. Students have an opportunity to earn an ASE entry-level certification (Diesel Engines, Steering & Suspension, Electrical/Electronic Systems & Brakes).
Our Instructor - Frank Stafford
Mr. Stafford worked for Dean Machinery and Diamond International Trucks for nineteen years. He became an instructor at NCC in 2008 and is an ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician.
He received the Northland Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Education award in 2012 and Excellence in Classroom Teaching award in 2020.
Mr. Stafford attended the Diesel Technology program at NCC (formerly Platte County Vo-Tech) from 1988-89. The program and teachers (Dan Jeffrey and Al Zimmerman) made school enjoyable, Stafford said.
"I didn’t think school could be that way," he said.
After spending years working in the diesel industry in almost every shop position, the role of Diesel Technology instructor at NCC appealed to Mr. Stafford because it was an opportunity to challenge himself and give back to his alma mater.
Mr. Stafford said he hopes his students get a glimpse into what their work life is going to be if they continue in the diesel industry while attending his class.
Seeing students excel and enjoy class is his favorite part of teaching, Mr. Stafford said.
"I sure like the moment when the proverbial light comes on, and you can tell that they were trying to understand what you were saying and then everything clicks," he said. "I like when the bell rings and they are just having such a good time they don’t want to quit."
In his free time even though Mr. Stafford claims he hates fun, he collects old tractors, rides motorcycles and four-wheelers.
Career Opportunities
The Diesel Technology program addresses core industry-wide skills required for diesel occupations.
Students who graduate the program can pursue jobs as a diesel mechanic, parts or shop manager, or a motorcycle, farm equipment, auto, marine, heavy equipment, and aircraft mechanic, immediately after graduation or after pursuit of higher education and training.
