Holly Hall Elementary
Family Update 02.27.22
A Message from the Principal
Greetings Holly Hall Families,
This week launches the ever popular Read Across America program! This is one of my favorite weeks of the school year, where we highlight the importance of literacy, the connection to reading for fun, enjoyment, and success!
We have a special Spirit Day each week (see below) and activities planned for each day. The hallways are adorned with beautiful decorations all related to reading, there are bulletin boards and posters hung, and our front showcase highlights the launch of our community wide reading of "Adventure according to Humphrey." We will launch the book reading Tuesday during Family Night where each family will receive a copy of the book. There will be guest readers from the community, including the Elkton High School football team! Paws for Reading will be here Thursday to give our STUDENTS a chance to read to the very trained therapy dogs that are a part of this program.
I hope your child(ren) come home with fabulous tales of the stories they read and adventures that await!
Enjoy and have a fabulous week,
Ms. Lowe

What is Exactly is this?
One School, One Book is a program designed to create a shared reading experience across an entire school community. There are several other Cecil County Schools who will be participating in reading Adventures According to Humphrey as well.
Following a common schedule across our Holly Hall Community, every family reads that book together at home. Every family in our school community reads the same book at the same time.
Holly Hall staff will enhance your shared reading experience by presenting enriching activities that enable children to share and experience the characters and world of each book. The ideal is that the book can be understood by early readers and yet still interest experienced readers.
During the month it takes to read our One School, One Book selection, we will implement a variety of activities each day to heighten and promote interest in and discussion of the book. Students experience the story with their family and enjoy participating in the follow-up activities at school the next day. This strategy builds daily awareness of the details of each story and encourages deep, attentive, and personally gratifying listening habits. When our school models the habit of regularly reading together as a family, you create a strong foundation for literacy in each child’s life.
When we read a children’s novel across the entire school, we spark a community-wide conversation. That conversation takes place on playgrounds and parking lots, in grocery stores and churches, across our community. A conversation that rich, involving hundreds of students and families, inspires a rich appreciation of literature and lifelong readers. It establishes a culture of family literacy.
Why Should My Family Participate?
The benefits of reading aloud are remarkable. Studies have shown that reading to children helps them to listen better and longer, to build bigger vocabularies, to understand concepts better, to feel positive about both books and learning – and much more.
What Exactly is Required?
Each activity is 100% optional. Each week chapter readings by various community members will be posted on YouTube, optional family activities will occur each week, as well as opportunities to support your child's reading each chapter, prizes for participation and a culminating fun night reading the last chapter together with games and prizes. It will be so much fun!
How Do We Sign-Up?
Families who attend Family Night will each receive a copy of the book. We want ALL families who wish to participate the opportunity to receive a free book.
If you are unable to attend Family Night but want to participate please complete the following survey: https://forms.gle/P1sCNqiaJajcTFPX9 A book will be sent home with your child.
