Class Spotlight - 5th Grade
Our 5th graders were blessed with an amazing opportunity to tour Bakers Candies store and chocolate factory in Greenwood, NE. Todd Baker, son of former Louisville Lion alum and Bakers Candies founder Kevin Baker, taught the students about running a business and the process of making chocolate. Each student received one of their world famous chocolate meltaways. This was the perfect field trip for our students after they just finished reading Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. We are all very thankful no one fell into a chocolate river or turned into a blueberry. Take a peak at their website to see if any of their sweets interest you.
OCTOBER FAMILY CHALLENGE - Attend Omaha Lancers Family Hockey Night
The Omaha Lancers will be playing the Cedar Rapids Roughriders on Saturday, October 19th. It would be awesome if we packed Ralston Arena with Louisville Lions! Students have a chance to be called down to the ice and shoot a puck at Mr. Schwartz or Mr. Mathis!

Counselor Corner - Mrs. Linda Allen
Hi, I’m Linda Allen. I’m the elementary school counselor. This is my 25th year here at Louisville Elementary and my 38th year of being a teacher…(Yes, I’m old!) I love working with all the kids on a daily basis. Each month, I will put in a Counselor’s Corner note about some child educational topic. Today the topic is SLEEP in school-aged children.
American Academy of Pediatrics Supports Childhood Sleep Guideline
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued a Statement of Endorsement supporting the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) guidelines outlining recommended sleep duration for children from infants to teens.. The AAP endorses the guidelines and encourages pediatricians to discuss these recommendations and healthy sleep habits with parents and teens during clinical visits.
The consensus group recommends the following sleep hours:
- Children 3 to 5 years of age should sleep 10 to 13 hours per 24 hours (including naps) on a regular basis to promote optimal health.
- Children 6 to 12 years of age should sleep 9 to 12 hours per 24 hours on a regular basis to promote optimal health.
- Teenagers 13 to 18 years of age should sleep 8 to 10 hours per 24 hours on a regular basis to promote optimal health.
The group found that adequate sleep duration for age on a regular basis leads to improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, emotional regulation, quality of life, and mental and physical health. Not getting enough sleep each night is associated with an increase in injuries, hypertension, obesity and depression, especially for teens who may experience increased risk of self-harm or suicidal thoughts.
In addition to these recommendations, the AAP suggests that all screens be turned off 30 minutes before bedtime and that TV, computers and other screens not be allowed in children's bedrooms. For infants and young children, establishing a bedtime routine is important to ensuring children get adequate sleep each night. Thanks for learning about sleep…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Linda Allen

COFFEE BREAK!
This school year, we would like to continue to provide the opportunity for staff at Louisville Elementary to enjoy a cup of coffee from Black Sheep Coffee House in Springfield on Fridays. New for this year, we will be making the coffee runs on the first and third school day Fridays of each month. If you are interested in donating money to treat a staff member to a cup of coffee, please send donations in an envelope labeled “coffee” to Lisa Sheehan.
Each Friday, names are drawn to see whose order is paid for by the appreciative families of Louisville. Donations can be made at anytime through the year. Thank you for your generosity!
