P.S. 88Q Weekly Update

Week of August 17th

What Will Our Reopen Look Like?

There is no other staff that wishes we all were back in school, but safety is always our priority. Our Chancellor outlined the model choices that all schools had in July. Our School Leadership Team met many times over the summer to discuss and decide what model best served the families of PS 88Q. We decided on Model 2, and submitted our choice and it was approved under our Superintendent. Under Model 2, students are categorized into four cohorts, Group A, B, C, and D. Group D are the students who are learning remotely all five days. Group A, B, and C chose a blended model. Below is the schedule for the days according to group. Children will all be learning five days a week, some completely remote, others in a blended model. Additionally, our student learning hours will be 8:30am to 2:00pm. Students will continue to have breakfast in the classroom at 8:30am as well as instructional lunch in the classroom. Big picture

Remote or Blended

I know how hard this decision is for families. We as a school community are working to find ways to support you in all aspects. Families can still opt into REMOTE LEARNING ONLY, at any time through the link below. Families will have the opportunity to opt back into blended learning at the end of October. Below is the link to opt into remote only, as well as guidance on time periods to opt back into blended.

Weekly Parent Town Hall Meetings/Coffee with Mrs. O'Shaughnessy

One of my favorite things is meeting with our families and community. Ms. Ramos and I have hosted Coffee with Mrs. O'Shaughnessy twice a month in the building since September 2018. When we pivoted to remote learning, we increased our meetings to weekly. We have continued throughout the summer, as being together and staying informed remains our priority. This week I will host our Parent Meeting on Thursday, August 20th at 10am. (Our regularly scheduled time is Wednesday's @ 4:00pm, but our Chancellor is meeting with the all NYC DOE staff at that time this week). Our meeting will come after his meeting as to discuss any new information. The Zoom link is will be sent via email. If you want to update or add your email to our list, please email me at loshaughnessy@schools.nyc.gov.

What Is Next?

This week, we are programming our students into cohorts. Students who are learning in a blended model will be assigned Group A, B, or C. We will be accommodating siblings for the same day. Thank you to all of you who completed the survey. We also have a report indicating siblings if you did not get a chance. All parents must be notified of their child's cohort by August 26th. We will communicate that with all families prior, as soon as we complete the programming. After cohorts are created, I will host Cohort Specific Parent Meetings, with breakout groups per grade.

What Can I Do To Be Prepared?

When we pivoted to remote learning, our Google Classrooms became virtual classrooms in literally hours. Students were assigned ps88q email accounts. This year we will continue using Google Classroom, but students WILL NOT BE USING THEIR PS88Q EMAILS. The students have a NYC DOE email which they will have for the entirety of their public school years. Yes, up until High School! To be ready, there are a few things you can do now to activate your child's email, and join my new Google Classroom Office :Mrs. O'Shaughnessy's Office. I will be shifting from my existing office (ps88q email) to my new one. Students will also be attached to their new Google Classroom using this account, NOT THE PREVIOUS ONE. Here are the steps to join:

Your Student Account ID and Password

To retrieve your account ID and password:

  1. Go to Student Account Self Service(Open external link)
  2. Enter your 9-digit Student ID (OSIS) number. (You can find your Student ID number on a report card, your student ID card, or in your NYCSA account.)
  3. Enter your birthday.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. If the information you enter matches your student record, your username will be displayed.
  6. Your student ID is your username followed by @nycstudents.net. For example, if your username is JaneD, your student account ID is JaneD@nycstudents.net.
  7. If you haven't already set up a password, you will be asked to set one up.
  8. Pick a password that only you will know.
  9. Re-enter your password.
