Principal's Message
Dear HMS Staff,
The end of the year has arrived. My goodness, what a year it was! No matter the experiences had, the good and tough, we made it through and have laid the foundations for next year. Change is difficult and sometimes difficult to navigate. However, change can be a great thing, when we are focused on doing what is right in order to help our students become successful. So, I thank all of you for the year we have had. I do feel blessed to be a part of Henderson Hawk Team. Our students need us and I have always valued the people that are here each day doing the good work. If you have not heard me say thank you lately, please hear it now. It takes a united team to transform our school and I need all of our members on board as we collaborate and complete another year with our students. One activity we did this year guided by Brig Leane (our Solution Tree Consultant) with the Leadership Team centered around how we want to be remembered when we close out the 2019-2020 school year. I say that to remind each and everyone of our team members that “ united we stand, divided we fall”. What changes will each of us make to ensure that we complete the final year at Henderson in the most powerful way for our students?
On Friday, I thoroughly enjoyed the 8th grade awards and recognition ceremony coordinated by Ms. Kathy Tatum with the support of Ms. Myton and Ms. Smith. It was a beautiful celebration. Our students that have worked hard this year and earned awards were supported by a large turnout of families. Students also cheered each other on as their peers received awards. We need more and more of these moments! How can we work together to increase the number of students receiving academic accolades as well as celebration of good citizenship? Next year, plans will need to address what we will do in regards to helping our staff support our students to recognize their value as scholars and citizens.
As we close out the year, here are a few mindful reminders. We will have summer school in our building. Summer school begins June 11, 2019, and our building will utilized until the end of July. Rooms scheduled to be used include the Media Center, MC15, and classrooms 13-34 (excluding rooms 24, computer labs in 9, 12, and 47).
Check Out Procedures:
Mary K. Johnson will facilitate the check-out process.
Counselors, registrar, bookkeeper, nurse and attendance secretary should have a list of end of the year procedures. It is expectation that all items are checked-off by Ms. Johnson and approved by Ms. Appiah-McNulty prior to leaving the building.
Teachers are expected to clean out classrooms, take down bulletin boards, turn in gradebook information (copy to be filed in the office), leave access to your home phone or cell numbers and return keys before leaving the building. Katie will provide a sign-off sheet for all completed items. Please take home any items of value since the building will be utilized by several groups this year. By Wednesday, May 23, 2019, all teachers will know room assignments for next year since we are looking at reorganization of grade level hallways.
Enjoy the remainder of the year and have a super-fantastic summer with your families. It is much deserved!
Sincerely,
Yaa Appiah-McNulty
