Independence Learning Commons

2015-2016

We have put together a short newsletter with a sampling of events and learning activities that have taken place within the Learning Commons at Independence. Our space is used for so much more than simply checking out books. Take a look!

Independent Reading

Reading continues to be our top priority in the Learning Commons! Students are encouraged to choose books that are 'just right' for their interests and reading level. Then they choose a comfortable spot to sit and read before returning to the classroom.

Accessing ebooks

We have been slowly increasing our ebook collection and want to encourage students and families to login to Universal Search and check out an electronic book for reading on many different devices. The availability of ebooks gives students and opportunity to check out new books even when school is not open. Directions and a chance to win a prize are available at https://goo.gl/2wEfkw

Makerspace

A Makerspace is an area that provides hands-on, creative ways for students to design, experiment, and invent as they engage in science, engineering, and tinkering.” (definition from edutopia). Our Makerspace in the Learning Commons inspires students to become participatory learners to uncover their talents, needs, and interests by making, producing, solving, creating, collaborating and thinking.
