Monthly School Wide Global Monthly Events for October/November

Global Read Aloud (October 2nd - November 10th)

Every month we do our best to make connections with others around the world. Every classroom at Wiley participates in some way.

The project was created in 2010 with a simple goal in mind; ONE BOOK TO CONNECT THE WORLD. From its humble beginnings, the GRA has grown to make a truly global connection with more than 1,000,000 students having participated.

The premise is simple; we pick a book to read aloud to our students during a set 6-week period and during that time we try to make as many global connections as possible. Each teacher decides how much time they would like to dedicate and how involved they would like to be. Some people choose to connect with just one class, while others go for as many as possible.

Global Math Week (October 10-17)

Join One Million Students, teachers, math leaders, and adults from around the globe in an astounding mathematical experience!

Experience the wonder of EXPLODING DOTS, a topic consistently described as a “mind blowing.”This mathematical story starts by assuming nothing (!) and works its way through grade-school arithmetic, high-school polynomial algebra, infinite sums, and advanced mathematics and unsolved research problems still baffling mathematicians to this day, all in one astonishingly accessible fell swoop!

United Nations Global Goals

In 2015 The United Nations launched The Global Goals for Sustainable Development, a series of ambitious targets to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice and fix climate change for everyone by 2030.

If the Goals are met, they ensure the health, safety and future of the planet for everyone on it. And their best chance of being met is if everyone on the planet is aware of them.

Here at Wiley we introduced our students to the Global Goals in 2015 and have continued to introduce them and infuse them in our grade level units.

Take a few minutes to watch the videos below to learn a little more.

UN Councils at Wiley

Our entire school has monthly UN Council Meetings where students across all grade levels K-5 get together in small collaborative groups represented by a country to build our school community.

Our first meeting was on September 29. Make sure to ask your student what country their UN Council represents. You might also want to ask them about The Kindness Rocks Project - Students got an opportunity to paint a rock and place it in our Wiley Community to inspire each other to join the pursuit of inspiring others through random acts of kindness.

Thank you! A special thank you to Triangle Landscape Supplies who donated over 500 rocks to Wiley, as well as the many parents who brought rocks into school. Also, a huge shout out to Tracy M. who helped with spray painting the rocks!
