Technology Return Procedures
If you are not returning to James Monroe, planning to travel or currently out of Edison, you are responsible for returning the device by June 22nd or you will be issued a fine. Please drop it off in person or contact the school for information regarding mailing the device to the school.
If your child is participating in ESY, Summer Literacy or an ESL program, they will keep their device and more information will be given at the conclusion of the program.
Important Attendance Reminders
- The school day starts at 8:55 am. Teachers will be taking attendance daily. Please make sure your child is logged on or arrived to school and ready to start each morning at 8:55.
- If your child is attending in-person, you must call the school to notify the main office if they are not coming to school.
- In-person students must be present because the classroom teacher is prepared and expecting them to attend their classroom.
- Please email your child's teacher and school administration if your child needs to stay remote due to sickness or quarantine, which is the only acceptable reason.
5th Grade Moving Up Ceremony
Mosaic Mural Adorns Garden Wall
It's time to make music!
This is the time of year when we present all 3rd grade students a demonstration of all the instruments to help them decide if they want to join either the Orchestra or Band next year.
We understand that you may want to wait until September to make the financial decision about renting an instrument for your child, but if you can, committing now will allow our instrument vendors and staff the chance to prepare as much as possible for next year. You will be given another opportunity to sign your child up for lessons in September, should you choose to wait. Rental information from the district’s instrument rental vendors is also provided for you below.

Our Math Night was Mathemagical!
100 families joined us at our Virtual Mathemagical Math Night on the evening of May 12th, 2021. It was evident in every session that the children were having a great time!
Mrs. Amin did a fantastic job preparing and organizing the event, planning fun activities to engage our students with math-related games using items from around their homes. We were so grateful to our staff for volunteering their time to lead these fun, interactive sessions.
Student Council members demonstrated outstanding leadership skills. Their service and support was very helpful.
We hope you had a mathemagical evening!
PTO Spring Bookfair!
Thank you to Mrs. Stacie Re and our parent volunteers for organizing the event. The bookfair not only puts books into our children's hands, but also helps provide funds to purchase new books for our libraries.

Special Announcements and Checklists:
As this school year comes to a close, kindly arrange to take care of the following:
Pick up medications that are in the nurse’s office - those that are not picked up are thrown away. You must call to arrange a day and time to pick up and sign for it.
Treatment Forms and Medication Forms for next year are in the links below for you to print and take with you to the doctor. Every new school year requires a new form from your student’s doctor.
Severe Allergy Treatment Plan: (2-pages must be completed)
Medication Form HS #7: This is for any medication not part of the above plans that your student can use in the nurse’s office, even over-the-counter medications need this form. Students are not permitted to carry any medications unless they are permitted by NJDOE regulations and have this form and completed self-carry and self-administration forms signed by the students health care provider.
If your child needs medication next year, please bring the completed and signed paperwork (above) to school the first day of the new school year WITH the medication/s. By law, they cannot be administered without an order. The nurse will be required to hand back the medication that does not have an order.
Please remember to sign the parent permission form, obtain a doctor’s signature for all prescription and non-prescription medications, and assure the doctor has filled in the dosage, frequency, and symptoms for administration.
All medication must be brought to school in the original container by a parent or guardian.
Children are not permitted to transport medications.
If your child has a special diet or health concern please inform the nurse’s office by emailing kathleen.sclafani@edison.k12.nj.us so a health care plan can be created for the new school year. Should you have any questions, feel free to contact the nurse 732-452-2970 X62004. This will be checked up until the final day of school June 22, 2021.
Health News for Middle School
Students going into Sixth Grade
1. Letters went out to all 5th Graders regarding the 6th Grade Immunization requirements for entry into Middle Schools. Please be sure to make your doctor appointments to have your student/s receive these and also read below if your student is interested in signing up for a school sport in the fall.
2. Sports Physicals are required for all Sports in Middle School. Students interested in joining a Fall Sport team or intramural, must obtain a sports physical from their physician. The Sports Physical forms are due in the MIDDLE SCHOOL NURSE’S office by July 1, 2021. There is no grace period for late entries. Forms returned AFTER the 7/1/2021 due date will not be cleared to participate PRIOR TO 1ST practice session. Please do not send your student’s sports physicals to this nurse’s office, they will not be received in time for the start of the school sport in middle school.
• Preparticipation Physical Evaluation (4 pages):
To participate on a school-sponsored interscholastic or intramural athletic team or squad, each student whose Sport preparticipation physical examination (HS Form #14A) was completed more than 90 days prior to the first day of official practice MUST also provide a Health History Update Questionnaire (HS Form #14G) (link below) of medical issues experienced since the last medical examination, completed and signed by the student’s parent or guardian. These will be mailed out in June along with the Pre-Participation Physical form above. Please let me know if you will require one sooner.
June is National Safety Month
Injuries are the leading cause of death for Americans ages 1 to 40. The good news? Everyone can get involved to help prevent injuries.
During National Safety Month, James Monroe Elementary School encourages you and your family members to educate yourselves and work together to help reduce the risk of injuries.
This June, we encourage you to learn more about important safety issues like preventing poisonings, transportation safety, and sun safety to protect from the sun’s harmful rays.
· Transportation safety: Remember when you are driving, that your family depends on you to keep them safe and be around for a VERY long time. Doing other activities while driving – like texting or eating – distracts you and increases your chance of crashing. Almost 1 in 6 crashes (15%) where someone is injured involves distracted driving.
· Poisonings: Nine out of 10 poisonings happen right at home. You or your children can be poisoned by many things, like cleaning products or another person’s medicine. Please be sure to have cabinet locks on your doors with cleaning products in them, to keep out of reach of small children’s hands and mouths!
· Choosing an Insect Repellent for Your Child: Mosquitoes, biting flies, and tick bites can make children miserable. While most children have only mild reactions to insect bites, some children can become very sick. One way to protect your child from biting insects is to use insect repellents. However, it’s important that insect repellents are used safely and correctly.
Read on for more information from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) about types of repellents, DEET, using repellents safely, and other ways to protect your child from insect bites.
· Sun Protection: Sun protection is essential to skin cancer prevention – about 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers and about 86 percent of melanomas are associated with exposure to UV radiation from the sun. Learn how to protect yourself and your children to stay safe. Sun protection should include protecting your children’s eyes, head & Scalp, and skin.
