It's Mid March and the school year is picking up speed. Hopefully Seniors are figuring out their plans for next year whether that means going to a college, getting a job or some other productive endeavor. I've been meeting with many seniors lately who are applying to one of the fabulous community colleges we have around the bay area. Whatever their path is, I wish all of the seniors well and hope they are able to find all the resources they need to pursue it. I'm always here to offer any resources we have to aid in the future planning of our students. Another resource opening up to our students next week is the long awaited Westmont Wellness Center. It is in the corner of the library and it is a very peaceful and beautiful space. Students can access the space for a variety of reasons and get assistance from the Wellness Coordinator. Students can learn a variety of wellness strategies to use when faced with difficult issues. For guidelines concerning use of the wellness center check out this FLYER. I hope everyone has a chance to check it out and learn some valuable strategies.

Do you love the ocean? If so, check out this 6 minute video by Roadtrip Nation, 5 Jobs for People Who Love the Ocean. You might be surprised by some of the jobs these people have found, from certified jet pack flight instructor to surf forecaster. The people in this video merged their love for the ocean with other skills they have to find the perfect job for themselves. You too can find interesting careers by meshing your interests/hobbies with companies. Start with your favorite class or interest and then use google or YouTube to brainstorm careers and companies. Give it a try and keep notes about what you find so you can come back to it later. You can never do too much career research because there are new types of jobs popping up all the time. When your parents were sophomores there wasn't even a need for a Content Review Specialist (see the Career Spotlight below). Who knows what jobs will be popular in 5-10 years.

- There are 13 different trades within the Union of Building Trades. Many of these started out as Guilds where an apprentice would train with a master until they achieved a level of training so they could create a "master piece", a piece of work equivalent to the master teacher.
- The Elevator Constructors are the highest paid among the building trade workers.
Juno, a company that can help you get money cheaper
Cost of College: For information about how to lessen the college debt, check out the partnership between our Inventavation Club and Juno, a company started by a group of millennials from Harvard University who realized young people were drowning in student debt and wanted to do something about it.
They realized that if they got a bunch of people together, they could use the power of group buying (similar to a Groupon or Hotels.com) to negotiate a better deal for everyone. They’ve done it successfully for three years now and opened up the negotiation group to anyone who’s interested.Anyone who wants to join can do so on their website. It takes 2 minutes and just needs some basic info. It’s also totally free and there’s no commitment to take any of their deals. It’s just another option on the table for saving money. Just to name a few things you'll find are interest rate discounts for undergrads and grads, 0.25% rate discount for refinance and up to $2,000 signing bonus for people who refinance.
They also have several scholarships including a monthly one for $1,000 that can be applied to current tuition or towards your existing loans if you already have some. On their website, you can explore multiple other scholarships.

College Spotlight
University College Dublin (in Ireland)
Originally known as the Catholic University of Ireland and subsequently as the Royal University, the university became UCD in 1908 and a constituent college of the National University of Ireland (NUI). In 1997, UCD became an autonomous university within the loose federal structure of the NUI and UCD students are awarded degrees of the National University of Ireland.
UCD has been a major contributor to the making of modern Ireland. Many UCD students and staff participated in the struggle for Irish independence and the university has produced numerous Irish Presidents and Taoisigh (Prime Ministers) in addition to generations of Irish business, professional, cultural and sporting leaders.
Building on the tradition of its founding rector, UCD today seeks to deliver on his Idea of a University through how it fosters young minds. UCD is the most popular university in Ireland, attracting the highest number of first preference applications from Irish students. Its national reach is deeper than any other Irish university, with students drawn from all corners of the country. UCD is very much part of the fabric of Dublin, a city with a truly European feel.
UCD continues to extend its international reach and today is Ireland’s most international university with over 6,000 international students, drawn from over 120 countries. In addition, the university places great emphasis on the internationalisation of the Irish student experience – preparing all UCD students for future employment and life that crosses borders and cultures. UCD is a member of the Universitas 21 network of global research universities, which offers a variety of student mobility initiatives, including an annual undergraduate research conference, summer school and traditional exchange programmes.
