Series Spotlight: 'Truly Devious' by Maureen Johnson, Young Adult Fiction

Big picture

Ellingham Academy is a famous private school in Vermont for the brightest thinkers, inventors, and artists.

It was founded by Albert Ellingham, an early twentieth century tycoon, who wanted to make a wonderful place full of riddles, twisting pathways, and gardens. “A place,” he said, “where learning is a game.”

Shortly after the school opened, his wife and daughter were kidnapped. The only real clue was a mocking riddle listing methods of murder, signed with the frightening pseudonym “Truly, Devious.” It became one of the great unsolved crimes of American history.

True-crime aficionado Stevie Bell is set to begin her first year at Ellingham Academy, and she has an ambitious plan: She will solve this cold case. That is, she will solve the case when she gets a grip on her demanding new school life and her housemates: the inventor, the novelist, the actor, the artist, and the jokester. But something strange is happening. Truly Devious makes a surprise return, and death revisits Ellingham Academy. The past has crawled out of its grave. Someone has gotten away with murder.

Spotlight on Library Services: Friends of the Library

We're fortunate to receive the support of a newly formed Vinton Friends of the Library chapter! This group meets the third Thursday of the month at 6pm at the library, and supports the library through fundraising, promotion, and volunteerism. Interested in joining? Email vintonia.friendsofthelibrary@gmail.com today!
This year we're fundraising in style! On March 10, 2024, VPL staff is hosting a Red Carpet Viewing Party from 5-7pm at the library. Watch your favorite celebrities take to the red carpet before the Oscars! Semi-formal dress is encouraged, but not required, and this event is for patrons 21 and older. We'll have movie trivia, drinks and appetizers, and two large screens for viewing the fashion! We will be accepting free-will donations. In addition to the party, you can now purchase $10 raffle tickets for your chance to win a 2 hour limo ride before the party for you and your friends! Thanks to our friends at Express Limousine in North Liberty, the limo will pick up our winning group at 3pm the day of the party, and will return to the library at 5pm. Click on the link below to purchase your tickets! All proceeds from this event will benefit our 2024 Summer Reading Program.
